"Why am I doing this to myself?" Lucinde said to herself as she stared at her thick textbook, Health Assessment in Nursing. The book was so thick that it wouldn't fit in her bag. In addition to this, the texts in the book were small. With so much information needed to be memorized, it brought a lot of stress for a first year nursing student like her. It felt like she chose the wrong career path.
"I never even wanted to become a nurse in the first place," she muttered under her breath. She was suddenly reminded of the reason for why she chose this course. It was due to her parent's expectations. Coming from an asian family, the career paths are often decided upon by the parents. For someone like Lucinde who has many relatives that are health professionals, she was bound to walk the same path. Although she never wanted to pursue nursing, she knew that she had no choice in the matter. Her dreams of becoming an artist will never be taken into consideration by her parents. They believed that there was no future for her if she pursued her dreams.
Moreover, she was also a lazy introverted person. She didn't exactly fit the criteria of being a nurse. She would rather lock herself in her room and do her hobbies than do something productive outside. Despite being lazy, she was forced to study out of guilt and respect for parents. They were supporting her financially for her education. They were basically giving her everything that she needed for her future. All she needed to do is study and do her part as a student.
"Okay. So next, I have to palpate the head . The normal findings for that step is that it is normally hard and smooth. No lesions are noted. However, if there are lesions or lumps, it may indicate recent trauma or sign of cancer," she started talking aloud as she continued memorizing the procedures and normal and abnormal findings for the head to neck assessment. She suddenly stopped upon realizing that she had forgotten the next procedure.
"Uh. Fuck. I forgot what comes next," she said as she began looking at her open textbook. She couldn't help but feel like crying upon realizing that there were more than fifty procedures that she must remember. At the same time, she also needed to be certain that her demonstration would be correct. She also felt anxious with performing the procedures. Her worry only increased as the date of the live return demonstration of the head to neck assessment became closer.
"I don't think I can do this," she blurted out as she cradled her head. She closed her eyes and tried to calm down. There are so many things that she was worrying about. Aside from the return demonstration, she hasn't finished a few assessments due this week. She felt like breaking down as the thought dawned upon her.
Suddenly, an idea came into her mind. She needed to calm down for a bit and let her mind rest. What better way to do so than to read something? Fiction stories? Manhua? Manhwa? Manga? What else?
She stood up from her seat and grabbed her phone that was on the bedside table. Afterwards, she sat on the bed with her back leaning against the headboard. Opening the an app in her phone, her eye lit up upon setting her eyes on a story that she recently added. It was a werewolf story. Although the plot seemed cliche, she did enjoy the drama and entertainment it brought. The story was about an omega, Annalise, who became the mate of the alpha from her pack. She wasn't exactly the ideal mate or luna of the mentioned alpha but she was actually blessed by the goddess of the moon. Unbeknownst to her, she possessed a power that lay dormant within her.
In the story, she was rejected by her mate at first as a result of her rank of being an omega. She experienced a lot of difficulties along the way. Most of them was due to a certain antagonist. Lucinde. She was the daughter of the beta of the pack. Aside from this, she was one of the most attractive amongst all the women in this pack. Her pitch black hair and hazel brown eyes captured a lot of attention. She poured a lot of her time and effort to appear mature due to her baby-faced characteristic. She disliked being considered cute instead of sexy. As a result, she often disliked individuals who naturally have that aura. And that person was the main character of the story, Annalise.
Her jealousy of Annalise caused her to do things that a normal antagonist would do. Torment her. Bully her. Spread gossip. Sleep with her mate. All the things that you would normally expect for the antagonist of a werewolf story. In short, Lucinde was your stereotypical bitch that hinders the female lead from having a relationship with the male lead.
"It's so weird to have the same name as this bitch," Lucinde commented as she read the story. She hated this character from the very beginning. From the introduction to the end, the antagonist Lucinde was too fixated with becoming the luna of the pack. It got to the point where she threw away her chances of being together with her mate.
Lucinde sighed as she read the point of view of Ezra, the antagonist's mate. He was actually a sweet and caring guy. He reminded her of Thoma, a character from Genshin Impact, a game that she was obsessed with recently. Ezra knows how to cook, clean, and basically do all the household chores. He was also very kind and respectful. Despite all these wonderful qualities, the antagonist Lucinde of the story hated him. The reason for this was largely due to his status of being an omega of the pack.
"Seriously? If I was her, I would have sticked to him like a glue. He's basically the ultimate husband. Why the heck would someone settle for that annoying and controlling jerk of an alpha?" Lucinde said in frustration as she read the next chapter.
This frustration became even more apparent when she read the next chapters. Ezra was killed as a result of trying to protect his mate from the rouges that invaded the pack. Lucinde slammed her phone on the soft cushion of her bed and screamed, "Fuck! No! Why would you kill him off?!"
"The author is blind. She can't see Ezra's appeal. The male lead is trash. I don't get why he is worthy of being the mate of the protagonist. All he ever do is fuck around and try to control Annalise."
"And why the heck is Annalise too blind to see that he is also to blame for this whole predicament?"
"Ugh. If I was the Lucinde from this story, I would treasure Ezra. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with his personality and status," Lucinde said to herself as she imagined Ezra's handsome face. Despite the author's description of him having an innocent youthful appearance, he was definitely attractive. She had seen fan arts of him online. Although some people prefer the more mature and masculine appearance for male characters, Lucinde has many types that she preferred and this includes, the innocent and cute type that Ezra possessed.
Lucinde laid her head onto one of the pillows of her bed and closed her eyes. She began to daydream of scenarios involving one of her favorite characters in the book. "It would be nice if I can see him in person," she whispered. Those words would soon shake her world.
