The Fourth Letter

Why did she stop? The latest date on the letters was a while ago.

She wouldn't just forget, would she?

JK frowned, folded up the letter and put it back in its envelope. He was about to open the next when Tito Jovanni, who was joining them, called him for dinner.

At dinner in a fancy restaurant just by the side of town, Juan Karlos couldn't pay attention. He wasn't hungry, just pushing his dinner around on his plate with a fork. The others noticed it immediately, asking him what was wrong. JK just shrugged and when they were done, headed back to the van so he could carry on reading.

"Juan Karlos, are you sure you're okay?" Darren asked, sitting on the seat from across Juan Karlos. "Yep," JK replied automatically. "Then why weren't you eating?" Darren asked, frowning now. "I.. Umm.. Just had stuff on my mind, that's all." JK replied.

"Well, if that's all," Darren said, smiling at him and walking away.

Juan Karlos heaved a sigh of relief, and pulled out the next letter. This was the fourth one, now. Fourteen letters more after this. Maybe then he would know why she stopped.

Dear Juan Karlos,

I'm always writing these letters to you now. I've kinda wasted all my pocket money on stamps, which is stupid because you will never read this. Or maybe you will? Maybe you're reading this right now. Okay, I'll admit that I just had a fan girl moment at the thought of you reading this. You touching the paper.. Oh my gosh.

JK laughed out loud, earning a suspicious look from Lyca.

You know how I told you about Lisa? Last week? Well, I'm starting to like her a bit better now. We ended up being partners for this project we're doing in English. She's funny, and almost always making jokes, even if most of the time they are at her expense. She's pretty clever, too. I didn't mention what happened last week and she didn't either. I wish I did though, because I'm dying to know how she got the courage to do something like punch Maggie in the face.

Oh, Juan Karlos. I wish I could meet you so badly. Just to give you the biggest hug of your life, to let you know that we love you. I hate it when you cry, especially when you feel like you're not wanted.

Swallowing, JK reached out and touched a small smudge on the paper. Like a tiny little drop, near the edge. A teardrop?

Because you are, you are loved by so many. Especially me. I love you, Juan Karlos.

Is that stupid? To love someone you've never met? Yet I do feel like I've met you. l feel like I've known you all my life.

But guess what? I finally got a new The Voice Kids Album! I think I've infected little Maddie too, because she sits on my knee when I go on the house computer, looking at pictures of you with me. She even begged me to make her a Twitter account, but I didn't because she's a little young to be stalking you. Maybe when she's older.

She actually just walked in my room right now, and asked what I was doing. She's sitting on my knee right now, and is practically begging me to let her write something. But her penmanship is a little.. Dodgy, so she can just write her name.

JK looked at the wobbly letters spelling out 'Maddie'.

Well, I've run out of things to write and my hand is aching a little. So I'll stop for now, but I'll write soon, I promise.

Lots of love,
Addie

Juan Karlos stretched, yawning. A letter fell of the chair and onto the floor. He was just getting off the chair to get it when Darren walks by, carrying his laptop under his arm. He spotted the letter and picked it up.

"No!" Juan Karlos cried before he could stop himself. "What?" Darren asked, reading the letter quickly. It was one JK already opened. "I.. Um.." JK struggled to find a reason on what was wrong with Darren reading his fan mail. Darren smiled, and put the letter back in Juan Karlos' hands. "Sweet," Darren said, before heading to the back of the big van with his laptop.

Taking the letters, JK counted them out and tied them back up in the blue string.

Eighteen, still.

Four down, and fourteen to go.
