Chapter 1

See that girl over there? Yes, the blond with the curly hair checking her makeup, chatting it up with her friends? Yep, that's not me. If you look behind her you'll see a tiny girl with mouse colored hair sitting in the corner by a tree. Her nose shoved in a book. Now that is me. My name is Zoe Martin. I was never one of those girls that had a lot of friends and all that, but I'm okay with that. I would rather read a good book than go to some stupid party that resulted in booze and regret. I wasn't anti social or anything. I guess that's one of the reasons people found this so hard to believe...Anyways I was just turning the page of the book I was reading when Amy came up to me.

Amy is my one good friend. My best and sometimes annoying friend. Remember when I said I wasn't anti social? Well I'm not, but Amy was very very social. How we became best friends is still a mystery to me.

"Hey! You busy?" She asked sitting next to me on the ground.

"Not anymore I suppose," I said sighing as I closed the book. "What's up?"

"So there's this new movie coming out Friday and I know you'll love it! We have to go see it!"

I swear we go through this almost every week. With Amy theres always a new movie or party that she tries to get me to go to, and it always results the same way.

"Are you kidding me? A new movie? I'm so excited, of course i'll go!" I replied feigning excitement.

"Really?" She asked hopeful.

"No." I laughed. Why she bought that I don't know.

"You're so mean sometimes." She said, smacking me on my arm.

I continued to laugh finding this really funny for some reason.

"Now you should have seen that coming, you know I'm not a movie person."

"We'll you didn't even give me a chance to tell you what movie It is!" All anger towards me disappeared as she became excited to tell me more about this movie.

"Do please go on," I said in a monotone voice.

"Well, you know how you're always asking and reading about death and what happens afterwards and stuff?"

Now that got my attention.

"Well, the movie is called afterlife! It's about just that!" Hmmm. Interesting indeed.

"Alright what's the catch?"

"What do you mean?" She said with a hint of guilt in her voice. I gave her my "I know there's more" look.

"Fine! Apparently this is supposed to be a really good movie... and everyone's going...and Aaron asked me to go with him!"

"Okay there is no way I'm going to be a third wheel-"

"That's the thing you won’t be! Aaron has this friend that you-." There it was. I knew it!

“I think i’ll pass.”

“Please will you at least think about it? This will be loads of fun!”

“I’ve thought about it and the answer is no.”

I got up from where I was sitting and began to make my way back inside the school. I checked my watch seeing that there was about 10 minutes left before lunch was over and class began. I was quiet as we walked to our shared locker while Amy continued to go on about the movie and something about a double date. Just then someone came up to us. I think I recognized him as one of the soccer players. Definitely in the popular crew.

“Sup Amy?” I turned around. Amy was staring at the guy like some lost puppy.

“Hi Aaron!”

So this was Aaron. I looked him over. He was tall, maybe a little over 6’, with red hair. He was dressed casually but you could tell it was expensive clothing.

“And I take it you’re Zoe?”

“That’s me.”

“Nice to meet you, I’m Aaron,” He said sticking his hand out for me to shake. Was it normal for high schoolers to shake each others hands still?

“Ditto,” I replied shaking his hand.

“So Aaron, Zoe and I were just talking about that new movie coming out.” I rolled my eyes and continued to gather my books for my afternoon classes.

“So you’re coming with? Cool, supposed to be a good one. The Afterlife.” he said the last part in what was supposed to be a scary voice waving his hands in the air.

“Sorry, but I won’t be going.”

“Oh.” he stood there awkwardly.

“Well, i’ll be going to class now, nice to meet you Aaron.”

I closed the locker and began walking in the direction of Trig. A little while later Amy came in and sat next to me in the back. She couldn't stop talking about Aaron and the stupid movie.

“So, what did you think of him?” she didn’t give me a chance to reply as she kept going on and on about how amazing he was. As people started filling their seats the bell rang and our teacher Mrs. Stauer came in. She finally stopped talking then thankfully or I would have been forced to throw something at her.

“We’ll finish this conversation later,” she whispered.

“Theres nothing more to discuss!” I said half yelling in frustration.

Of course the whole class would turn to look at me just then. Just great I thought, glaring at Amy. I sank deeper into my seat as they realized there was nothing more to look at and turned away as Mrs. Stauer went on with the lesson. I brought out my ipod putting in my earphones. The last thing I heard was Amy apologizing as I drowned out the world with the beautiful voice of Ron Pope.
