Mikayla POV

"Ummmm, yay?"

"You don't seem too confident in your answer".

"What do you want me to say, Mikayla?"

I wanted him to tell me that I was making the wrong decision. I wanted him to want me to go. Sure, I made this decision on my own, but I didn't expect him to be okay with it.

"Nothing, Louis".

Awkward silence.

"What made you make this decision?"

"I realized that I couldn't be without you for a whole year. I wouldn't be able to take it".

"I'm a lucky guy", Louis said, pulling me into his arms. He buried his face into the crook of my neck. "I'm so glad that you're staying".

"Me too".

"And", he said, walking out of the living room and pulling me with him, "I think we should celebrate".

"Before we do", I stopped him, "are you sure there isn't anything that you want to say? Nothing at all?"

He had a blank look on his face before responding.

"No, Mikayla. Is there something wrong?"

"I guess not".

---------------------

"You're staying? That's so great!"

The next day, I told Ana the news. Her reaction was exactly what I expected. Louis was sitting in her armchair flipping through channels.

"Louis?", she said.

"Mmmm?"

"Zayn needs your help with something downstairs".

Louis was confused, as was I.

"So, why didn't Zayn call me instead of you?"

"I'm wondering the same thing", she said, "but, he still needs you".

"I'll be right back", he told me.

He was clearly still skeptical, but he pecked a kiss on my forehead and walked out.

"Okay, I have to say this quickly before he comes back", Ana turned to me.

"What are you talking about?"

"Just listen. Have you completely lost your mind? Why would you turn the job down? That's the stupidest thing you've ever done".

Ummmmmmmm.

"What are you talking about?", I repeated,  "2 minutes ago, you were happy for me".

"I was only doing that for Louis's sake. I think you made the wrong decision".

"Why?"

"IT'S A JOB, MIKAYLA. A job is something that you haven't had in a long time. And, most people don't get this opportunity as soon as they graduate, so you got lucky".

"Well, technically I graduated 8 months ago, so it's not soon. And, another job will come up. One that's already in this country. No, it won't. If it was going to, it would've happened already. Mikayla, I thought you were smarter than this".

"Smarter than what?"

"Smarter than the average girl who gives up an opportunity for her boyfriend. Louis will always be here. The job won't".

"No, he won't".

"What?", she asked, clearly irritated.

"He won't always be there. Long-distance relationships never work. Everyone knows that".
