Sunlight cut through the vine-covered trees, forming slashes of brightness on the dark jungle floor.
Hearing the rustling of leaves, C.H.I.P. froze in his tracks. He knew his prey was close. Looking up, he could see many vines swinging above. But did they signal the animal was nearby, or were they just blowing in the wind?
I crept up behind C.H.I.P., trying desperately not to make a sound for fear of scaring the creature off. But my knees were shaking. And my teeth were chattering. And I was sweating so much, it sounded like Niagara Falls pouring on the dead leaves below.
I watched C.H.I.P. with pride... but also with sadness. How did we get here? How did things go so wrong? And where could I go to change into dry underwear? I thought technology, my technology, would save the world, but now everything looked like... the apocalypse.
Suddenly, the animal swung down on a vine, its teeth bared in fury. It swiped at C.H.I.P. with its sharp claws, barely missing him as he leapt out of the way. But I wasn't so quick, and the creature's claws sliced my shirt right off of me.
C.H.I.P. and the beast dove into a pitched brawl, one set of animal instincts against another, evolution itself hanging in the balance. And all I could do was watch, shirtless and in sweaty boxers, wondering how the C.H.I.P. microthingy could have caused all this.
How could it – how could I – have turned my beloved Vortville into... a jungle?
