Since Natalia had led her through the estate and the associated property, Daria was regularly on a reconnaissance tour - of course with an ankle cuff.
She had not seen Bucky for two weeks, she was told that he was on a mission with some others.
In her eyes she found that quite impudent, after all, it had been him who had brought her here and kept her more or less captive here, and then he just takes off without saying anything.
In the meantime, Daria had made friends with some of the former Black Widows, if you want to put it that way.
However, she got along best of all with Ramona.
They were about the same age and they could swear that they had already met in the RedRoom.
However, one could never be sure of that.
The RedRoom was home to many girls and young women who had been trained as assassins, and they knew each other's faces, but nothing more.
Friendships were not welcome there - better said, they were not allowed.
Too great was the danger that a friendship would threaten a mission, so they were raised to be emotionally cold women without remorse.
Daria herself knew too well how hard it was for her after she was rescued from the clutches of the RedRoom during a mission.
She had to learn the most normal things about interpersonal relationships.
She had no idea what it was like to have friends or how to socialize.
At the age of 17, she was freed.
It took almost two years until she was able to function halfway normally in a social network again.
In contrast to the others, she was lucky and was able to escape the well-known medical intervention of the Black Widows.
When the girls were around 17 years old, they were picked up without warning one morning and taken to the medical ward.
There they were sedated and when they woke up they had no uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries left, but they were in hellish pain.
The reason why this procedure is delayed so much is that the girls should go through normal puberty.
They were supposed to grow into women first, which required the hormones that these organs produced.
It almost reminds one of the advice that every veterinarian gives to dog or cat owners - "Let them come into heat once and then we can sterilize them".
The missing organs would prevent the Widows from ever becoming mothers naturally - one less reason from which they could potentially be distracted.
Because their bodies thus radically shot from just completed puberty into menopause, the Widows often suffered from hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, depression, and so on.
