Karina

On The Road | 11:12 PM

It was a long and definitely not a silent drive.

The memory of my apartment building exploding left me morosely staring out of the car window, frowning at everything while listening to her blabbing.

She was tiny, pale-looking, and skinny but an incessant motormouth.

"...I warned you about naevis attacks before we left but, oh the mighty Karina doesn't take advice from anyone! You think you're better than the rest of us, don't you?!" She saves my life once, and suddenly she's the boss of me.

Weirdly enough, amidst all the whining I can sense that she's glad I'm okay.

"I'm grateful you came to get me, but could you dial down the nagging a bit? My apartment just got obliterated, so give me a break." I cut in, "—oh, and some psycho ninja tried to slit my throat yesterday," I slowly traced my neck with a finger.

Oddly enough, that shut her up.

We drove through the entire city block when I noticed she seemed like she was looking for a certain building.

"Is something wrong?" I asked.

"Nope." She replied abruptly, her eyes darting between the street and her phone. I have no clue where we're headed, but as long as it's not the Kosmo headquarters, that's fine by me.

"Are we lost? Do you need help with directions? Y'know you can always use the maps feature on"

"I've got the GPS covered, thanks a bunch." She interrupted. I can see that she was looking at an app on her phone but it was nothing like I've used before. It shows a huge letter K every time it loads, must be one of those new direction apps.

After a few more turns, her face finally lit up as we were approaching what looked like a pastry bakery with a dining area outside

After a few more turns, her face finally lit up as we were approaching what looked like a pastry bakery with a dining area outside.

A vibrant signboard proudly displayed the name "Synk Cafe" in eye-catching pastel letters.
