CHAPTER EIGHT: V(1)Rgin

Dakota steadily held his gaze, "Are you asking me a question about my private life, Daddy Dornan?" Dakota remembered that Jamie's friends from Belfast jokingly called Jamie Daddy Dornan for being the one who remained in control when they were out partying in London.

"God damn it, answer the question," Dakota was infuriating when she delayed gratification. The way she said his nick name gave it sexual connotations. Jamie knew he could induce a response from Dakota but physical contact between them was business. Asking if she was gay was stepping over relationship boundaries from business to personal and they both knew it.

Jamie thought how odd his friendship with Dakota really was. It went further than their acting. Eight months ago, they were rarely alone. On the film set they joked and were often joined by Millie and baby Dulcie. They left the film set separately but Dakota was driven to Jamie's rented home in a different car each night to maintain anonymity. After helping with the chores they worked together on the script so Jamie who arrived late to the project was brought up to speed. They spent so much of the day together that Jamie found his thoughts drifting to Dakota and what she was doing when not with him. Jamie worked long into the night and in the day that included physical training.

Before Jamie knew it, he was accustomed to having Dakota around on the film set and at home. Jamie's father, Jim worked as a doctor, his late mother was a nurse and his step mother a doctor. Conversations over the dinner covered various medical matters. He had come to the conclusion that with Millie heavily pregnant with Dulcie, and later a new mother, Dakota spending all day simulating a loving relationship with him then helping in all aspects of family life in the evening, it was possible he experienced transference, unconsciously redirecting his love and sexual desires for Millie to Dakota.

Looking back now, Jamie knew he spent most of his day with Dakota, but important things were left unsaid. He would never have known about her being bullied in school had they not run into Pete and Beth at the bar. He would never have known about her charitable endeavours if he hadn't overheard a conversation about it in her film trailer. What he did know was that Dakota was caring and generous. She laughed easily and merrily sometimes till she cried, the latter usually brought a lump to his throat. Dakota was mistress at making people feel that special to her, this made them feel that they knew her, but behind Dakota's merry laugh were impenetrable layers.

Jamie had fought thoughts of Dakota but they had not gone away. Time and distance had not diminished them. That afternoon demonstrated that they both felt intense physical attraction and passion.

Not keeping in touch had made Dakota realise her worst fears. The man she most fantasised about had cut and run. He caught a glimpse of some of that hurt in the depths of her eyes when she met him at the airport. She didn't ran into his arms like she used to. She had waited for him to close the distance. His earlier question would let Jamie know if he had won back her trust, trust enough to confide in him. "I'm being intrusive asking this but..."

Dakota knew theirs was never going to be a normal relationship. He might be ashamed, even guilty of the attraction he had for her. Yet they worked so closely, that they exchanged sexual health medical reports to make sure they didn't pass any sexually transmitted diseases when their genitals touched or bodily fluids were exchanged in love scenes.

Circumstances were conspiring to throw them together. Jamie seemed to know how she felt. She cared for him, far too much. Having admitted that to herself, she resigned herself to the possibility that Jamie could leave without word for months on end.

For someone who imagined her happy-ever-after as being on a working ranch in Colorado with a macho man by her side and many children running around them it was a blow to develop feelings for a co star who happened to be married.
