The Beverly Hills Hotel, October, 11, 2014

As Christopher steered Dakota towards the executive elevators Jamie's eyes lingered on the sensual sway of her hips reminding him of their intimacy. He longed to hold her feminine curves close to his body but was brought back to reality by the tall, handsome well built dark suited man standing discretely by the doorway. He was dark haired and looked to be in his late twenties. The stranger's eyes were glued on Dakota as she accompanied the older gentleman engrossed in conversation, laughing easily with him. The ripple of her irrepressible laughter carried to Jamie's ears. When Dakota glanced back and caught his admiring gaze, he nodded, his smile imperceptive. The elevator doors coming together, cut them off from seeing each other.

The twenty something, dark suited man found a seat with a good view of the elevator and spread out a broad sheet newspaper in front of him. He blended perfectly into his surroundings whilst surreptitiously observing everyone in the lobby.

Jamie had the stranger firmly in his sights turned to Audrey, "What was your hostility to Dakota about?"

"Don't get fooled by the Ice Princess, she's cold and frigid."

"So what if she is? It's no one's business, certainly not yours or mine."

"You like her."

"Do you know what I think? I think, you're judging Dakota by the child she used to be. The adult she's become was friendly with you, asked after your sisters but you were itching for a fight. What did she do to you other than not date you?"

"What," Audrey spluttered in horror.

"You're behaving as if she rejected you," Jamie flashed Audrey an impishly boyish grin.

"Come on," she exclaimed, "I'm only into men. Anyway, high school was a hyper sexual place it would be impossible keeping a gay lover secret." Audrey was three years older. Her younger sister Alice was the same age as Dakota. Audrey remembered one evening when Alice gave Dakota a lift home. A bowl of punch had been emptied over Dakota's head and the whisky and lemon left her eyes and nose red raw. That evening Audrey had felt sorry for Dakota. At the time, it was more important staying part of the in-group than standing up for a kid being bullied for her own incredibly rich parents' very public substance abuse problems and melt downs. Audrey had forgotten how bad things got for Dakota.

"Audrey..." Jamie's was getting exasperated, "Dakota didn't deserve to be embarrassed by you in front of Christopher and I. What's more, you know it."

"An actress who takes her clothes off for a living has thick skin..."

"I won't pretend to understand the depth of feeling between you and her, but if you and I are to keep our working relationship, show Dakota the winning personality you're trying to hide," Jamie used soft power to apply leverage.
