Conradina was staring at old photos that hung on the wall. She was intently staring at one specific photo. Those dusty frames and dirt almost destroyed the whole picture completely. The only thing that's left visible is the face and smile of a child, around five years old, smiling brightly to the camera, and a few patterns and laces on the child's skirt.
A little girl around the same age as the one from the picture tugged on her skirt, "Tía, I never had that skirt! That couldn't be me. " She squinted her eyes as she stared at the girl in the photo.
She backs away in an instant, humorously jumping in horror. "GASP! Is she my doppelganger!?"
Conradina chuckled for a bit and let out a sigh. "No. That's not you, and that's not your doppelganger either. "
"You know, you've got to stop telling the kids stories about such nonsense. For goodness sake, Dina! It has only been 3 days since Christmas!" says a man with his long, grey beard, walking on a cane because of old age, slowly making his way towards the little girl with a basket full of mangoes in hand.
The little girl's eyes widened and twinkled as her big, bright, amber eyes were fixed on the mangoes within the old man's basket. "Wow! Are those for me, father? "
The old man chuckled, "I already told you. Call me Abuelo, cariño!"
Conradina smirked and turned to him, "That's really sweet, Father Diego."
He chuckles while opening his arms wide, expecting a hug. "What do you expect!? I helped raise Imelda after all! I may not be her biological grandfather, but I'm still technically her grandfather. Am I right? Because I know I am. "
Conradina walks closer to the man to receive his hug. "Yes, you're right. Well, we better get going. It's getting pretty late. It's going to be a long walk for the both of us alone to our house. "
Father Diego breaks off the hug and puts one hand on her shoulder. "Take care, okay? I hope your mind will change someday towards the... You know who."
Conradina's facial expression completely changed. She looked at the floor blankly, as if she was lost for a moment. Her eyebrows crossed and anger filled her eyes. Meanwhile, Luna was dragging the basket full of mangoes as she excitedly exclaimed, "Let's hurry home! I want to sink my teeth into these mangoes already! Mmmm! "
Conradina broke free from the trance when she heard the old priest laugh at the sight of the adorable little girl who was so excited about her mangoes. She looked at Luna and smirked before grabbing her hat and her niece's cloak.
"We really should be going now. The boys are all alone at home. Tell señora Perez I swung by. And tell her family I said hi."
She waved and looked at her niece, who was still desperately dragging her basket full of mangoes. She shook her head, then came closer to pick up the basket herself.
She opened the door and a cool breeze rushed to her face. "Come along, Lu."
With Luna's little feet, she hurriedly ran towards the old priest and tugged on his clothes. She was reaching for a goodbye kiss on the cheek. "Goodbye, Abuelo! Take care! I love you! "
Father Diego wept tears of joy as he embraced the little girl and received a little peck on the cheek as soon as he bent down to match her height. Her voice was so squeaky, tiny, and high-pitched. She sounds like a little bird, chirping in the early morning. "Awwwww... Abuelo loves you too, Lulu! Take care of your tía for me. "
Luna lets go of him and rushed to hold her tía's hand. She looked back at him, smiling, "I will!"
The door slammed shut.
