CARINA'S POV

I woke up that morning reaching out and looking for my wife in the bed beside me and when I didn't find her, I grunted in displeasure. Maya had promised me she wouldn't run so early that morning so we could enjoy some time in bed together, but apparently, she forgot her promise. I stretched out of the sheets and rubbed my eyes as I walked out of the room and as soon as I got to the living room, I creased my forehead not understanding the scene I found there.

Maya was sitting on the floor with a million sheets of paper around her, files open, baby photos clipped against the files, a clipboard in her hands and the pen cap serving as a chew toy for her.

-Buongiorno, Bambina! – I said trying to get her attention.

-Good morning, beautiful! I was about to wake you up, I need you! I've narrowed our possibilities down to 4 options! – Maya turned her gaze back to the clipboard for a second and made a brief note before jumping a little and standing up. – The shot is on the counter.

-Did you prepare it by yourself today? – I asked after standing on tiptoe and stretching my arms.

-Yes, I did it exactly as you do it every day, but if you want to check...

-No, there's no need. I know you are good at learning new things. – I winked at her playfully and poured myself some espresso before grabbing the shot from the counter. I sipped some coffee and mentally thanked the universe that Maya had managed to improve her coffee-making skills.

Returning to the living room, Maya already had her pants down as she faced the clipboard in her hands with her back to me. I placed the cup on the table and unsheathed the needle, inserting it into her buttocks and pressing down on the plunger.

-Ouch! Carina! – She complained loudly turning over her shoulder to face me.

-What? I thought you were distracted enough not to notice. – I commented, finishing the shot, and removing the needle from inside her. I bent down and gave the place two kisses, as I did every morning for the past 9 days. – Only 3 more until you're free.

-You could have distracted me in another way. – Maya still spoke with her back to me as I discarded the needle and syringe in a separate place.

-Apparently, I'm not as interesting as the clipboard in your hands. – I contradicted her, and she finally turned to me.

-It's an important decision! – She insisted.

-I know, Bambina! But don't you think you're taking this too seriously? – I asked back, even though I was happy with all the effort that Maya was putting into this decision. I still wasn't so comfortable with this sudden change of plans after so many months it took me to get used to the idea that we wouldn't have children, but seeing Maya go into the little things related to our baby was a way to calm my nerves. – I mean, being a healthy person with a good level of intelligence, makes them already a good option.

-Of course not! – Maya sighed and threw herself against the couch, frustration clear on her face. – There are so many things to consider!

-For example? – I asked, sitting next to her.

-For example, numbers 1 and 3 were eliminated for having a career based entirely on sports, we already have that from my genes. Numbers 7 and 10 were eliminated for having chronic illnesses and relatives with chronic illnesses. Number 2 was eliminated for being too short, I don't want our baby to be bullied for not growing up, I'm short enough already. Number 9 plays the piano professionally, but is this the kind of person we want to be the other half of our baby's genes? I mean, he sounds like a very calm person, and we won't know how to deal with a very calm person! We're too active for a calm person. – Her words flew from her mouth at an impressive speed, her eyes darting across the clipboard as she gathered up the information and justifications for eliminating each candidate.
