Shehnaaz
Adulting was no joke.
Asa child, my juvenile mind had always believed that being an adult had a freedom that was worth letting go of anything in my life. Well, I couldn’t blame my younger self either, as the lack of freedom in everything was my major childhood trauma but assuming everything will become magically easy was definitely a bit of a stretch.
“I know you hate your husband but it gives you no reason to cancel your honeymoon!” deepika sent me a disappointed look. Karan had been right, the only thing that could snap deepika back to normal was my mid life crisis.
An entire week had passed since the wedding night but I was still finding it a daunting task to erase that memory from my mind. Whenever I felt lonely or thoughtless, the unfortunate events from my wedding night played in my mind as though it were my favourite song. Every bit of that memory was still stinging at my heart in ways previously foreign to me.
The events that followed Sidharth’s great revelation mostly included cancelling our honeymoon. It was apparently dangerous and Going on vacation felt like it could do more harm to our relationship than good at the moment.
“What have you expected me to do then?” I said as I rolled my eyes at her.
“Give the tickets to me? I would’ve gone.”
Deepika and I sat down in our usual place in the cafeteria for lunch before she started her banter.
Deepika was a beautiful woman and I always admired how her doe like eyes went with the perfect cut of her face. With a small pointed nose sitting in the middle of it, below them were a perfect set of plump lips, that pouted more often than they smiled. Her beauty truly justified the attention she got in the hospital from almost every male doctor.
Despite her impeccable beauty and charming aura, she was making me regret making her my bestfriend. She could get on my nerves like no other, and she was a potential competition against Sidharth in that respect.
“Who cancelled their honeymoon?” Came another voice, followed by a screeching noise of chairs. I quickly recognised that the voice belonged to Karan.
Finding a chair across from me, he earned himself a glare. Beside him, Deep resorted to laughing, and the sight of it forced me to groan in misery.
“Shehnaaz.” Deepika answered to them. “who cancels their honeymoon funded by their husband?”
“Well, I’m surprised they even planned a honeymoon,” Karan said, grabbing a bunch of fries from my tray.
I scowled at him in annoyance but he just replied with an equally annoying smile. “Isn’t it too expensive? Considering how none of us was invited to the wedding? Must’ve saved a fortune.”
I rolled my eyes. “Wedding? It seemed more like my funeral. The funeral of my happiness.”
“What happiness are we talking about, you’re always depressed.” Deep frowned.
I shrugged and turned toward karan, “Anyway, did you declare your specialty yet?”
“Oh, yeah,” Deep replied for Karan with mirth filled in his eyes. “Karan wants to spend the rest of his life with his face between women’s legs. Thinks that’s the only thing he’s ever going to be good at.”
“Gynaecology then,” I said, trying to hide a smile from forming.
Karan glared at the both of us, “I’m not gonna be a gynaecologist. Ortho is more my thing.”
“Oh forget it, you’ve been on Mrs.Pandya’s service for a month now,” Deepika said. “You spend all your time in gynaecology. You don’t have enough exposure to master ortho.”
