Chapter 28 Brightstar

Brightstar slashed her claws through the cheek of the pitch black she-cat that had Birdsong pinned. The black she-cat growled and leapt off the Waterclan medicine cat before locking into battle with Brightstar. "Go!" Brightstar hissed to Birdsong as she swiped at the black she-cat's ears. Birdsong gave a quick nod and disappeared in the shadows. Brightstar charged and smashed into the black she-cat pinning her to the ground. "Who are you and why are you here?" Brightstar demanded angrily.

"Your camp holds unpure blood!" The black she-cat snarled. "We're only going to cleanse the world of this impurity."

"Who?" Brightstar flattened her ears. No one was going to kill her clan mates if she could help it.

"Call off your warriors and we'll be out of here before you could even see our claws strike his flank." Purred the she-cat. "We mean no harm to your gang, honestly, but these two cats shouldn't even exist!"

"What two cats?" Brightstar asked confusedly, but before the black she-cat could respond Brightstar felt claws dig into her back and haul her off.

"Stop messing around, Bess!" Brightstar whirled around to look at the cat who had thrown her off Bess, the black she-cat. The cat that had thrown her off was a white tom with black spots on his fur.

"I'm not messing around!" Bess retorted. "I'm trying to find the cat in charge and tell him to call of his cats so we can do what we came to do without hurting anyone."

Brightstar growled. "I'm in charge here and I'm not going to stop my warriors unless I have a perfectly good reason to!"

"We do have a good reason." Bess flexed her claws. "There is unpure blood here and we are only trying to stop it from spreading and causing chaos."

"What does that even mean?" Brightstar demanded. "Who are the two cats?"

"Come on, Bess." The black and white tom growled. "We aren't here to talk."

"But-" Bess started to protest.

"If Douglas sees you talking to the enemy then your a goner and you know it."the black and white tom's hazel eyes turned desperate. "I don't want what happened to my brother to happen to you."

"Robert's situation is completely different from this." Bess exclaimed annoyedly as the tom flexed his claws impatiently. "If Robert did what he was supposed to we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place."

Bess flattened her ears but didn't say anything else. The black she-cat only turned and stalked toward the warriors den. "I'm not going to hurt any cats who aren't involved in this unless they strike first though." She called over her shoulder.

Brightstar watched her walk away in shock. What in Starclan is going on here? The black and white tom growled behind her. Brightstar turned just in time to see claws flash in the moonlight and strike her shoulder. Brightstar countered with a few quick blows to the side.

"Birdsong!" Gingerfoot's voice came from the nursery. Brightstar gave the black and white tom one last scratch at the ears before turning to see the nursery surrounded with cats, but they weren't from her clan. Ivel stood in front of the entrance and wove through enemy cats, easily dodging blows. When any cat got close enough he'd slash at them. Rainwind was trying to fight his way to Ivel's side but enemy cats kept pushing him back.

Brightstar took a step to help but got tackled by the black and white tom. "Birdsong!" Brightstar heard Gingerfoot yowl again. "It's Riverheart!"

"Let me through!" Brightstar growled at the tom that was blocking her path.

"There's no way I'm letting you save the life of a cat that shouldn't even have been born." The tom snarled flicking his tail toward the nursery.

"Riverheart is my daughter!" Brightstar hissed.

"No her." The tom reassured. "I'm talking about the one protecting her."

"Ivel?" Brightstar breathed. "But that means-" A long, loud yowl erupted from the nursery cutting off Brightstar's thoughts.

"Someone get Birdsong!" Gingerfoot yowled desperately. "Riverheart's kits are coming!"
