Aiden POV

Aiden walked to the base of the stairs. He saw a familiar figure looking down at him and Mini over the stair railing. Aru, he thought, with a strange tingly feeling spreading throughout his veins at the sight of the pretty girl. Aiden called out softly, "Aru, is that you? Um, you okay?"

Aru shook herself and kept walking. "Yeah, um, I'm fine, Aiden," she replied. "I'll be back in a sec, just going to get something from my room."

Aiden sighed and said, "See you later for lunch, Aru." He exhaled as he watched Aru nod absently. He liked her so much that it hurt, and they still hadn't discussed the thing... but... he supposed some things just had to wait.

Even if it was painful, he would have to wait. Maybe he'd have to wait for eternity, wait enough time to watch her love someone else that loved her back... No. Bad thoughts, Aiden. He shook them off and turned away, but he could still feel a lingering ache in his heart.

Aru POV:

Aru wasn't really focusing on Aiden anymore as she walked across the polished hardwood hall to her room. Pushing the door open, she entered her cramped room.

Her room was quite small, and she had often thought of it as "a closet with delusions of grandeur." It didn't have much space for moving around, as the bed, side table, dresser, bookshelf, and desk took up most of the space, and what remained was cluttered by thick, dusty textbooks, crumpled-up tissues, wrinkled papers, scattered school supplies, rumpled candy wrappers, and clothes.

Aru turned on the lamp on her side table, and the sphere of warm yellow light brightened up her room considerably. She quietly closed the door, then narrowly avoided tripping over a pile of past due homework, worksheets, books, and angry notes from teachers that she liked to think of as Education Entropy. She wasn't quite sure what the exact definition of entropy was, but she thought it had something to do with chaos and disorder, which was unsurprisingly reminiscent of her schooling. Aru was actually pretty good at school and got excellent grades, (after all, she's Asian, not Bsian LOLL yes 😎 i put that steven he reference here bc im cool like that-) but the whole saving-the-world thing had put her off her game a little. It's not that she had trouble with the material or tests– she was good at that– it was that she didn't have time or energy to focus on education now. All of her concentration was currently focused on not letting the world end.

I should probably clean my room soon, Aru thought as she almost fell over a bowl, then a notebook, then a charger. She considered the thought for a moment, then shrugged in her mind. Meh, it can wait. She stumbled to her bed, which was next to her window, drawing a gray blanket around her shoulders. She was surrounded by a plethora of fuzzy blue and gray throw pillows and other blankets. Reaching over to her side table, she flipped a switch and some fairy lights came on around her bed. She burrowed under her covers, surfacing to grab one of her favorite books: Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian.

She began to read, the only sounds an occasional rustle and crinkle of a page turning. At one point, Aru glanced over at her phone. 12:24 pm. She picked it up, the smooth silver-and-blue mandala patterned case cold against her fingers. She checked her messages, laughing quietly at a meme her human friend had sent her, and scrolled idly through her playlist. Reaching over to her side table again, she took her earbud case and put her earbuds in. She began to listen to "soothing songs: r & b, rap, pop, etc" and laid back. After only a few songs, about 12 minutes later, she heard a knock on her door.

Pulling back the covers, Aru sat up straight, taking her earbuds out. She asked softly, "Yes?" Brushing away the hair in her eyes, she saw the door open and there was Mini, bathed in the pool of buttery-yellow light from the hallway light.

Mini's straight black hair fell to her shoulders, curling a bit at the ends– a touch by Nikita. She wore a royal purple shirt and straight jeans, which complimented her warm chocolate-brown eyes. Her expression turned concerned as she saw Aru's face. "Hey, Aru, we were just about to eat lunch. You okay?"

"Yeah, of course! Why wouldn't I be?" Rubbing her eyes, Aru tried to force another bright, fake-cheery smile. But that wasn't going to work on Mini.

"Seriously, Aru."

Aru sighed and was silent for a while. "No, not really." She stared down at her rug. "You know, with Kara and everything..." Aru trailed off, not allowing her voice to break and closing her eyes tightly.

Mini stepped forward and hugged her. "We'll fix this, I promise," she assured Aru, determination in her voice. Aru smiled at her for real this time. She didn't say anything, but Mini knew what Aru was thinking.

I hope so.
