Chapter 12

During the ride back to HQ you listen to Jett and Phoenix's thoughts. The lovebirds have finally gotten together. Took them long enough.

As soon as you landed back in HQ, you immediately went with Yoru to the infirmary. Besides wanting answers that only Sage could give you, you also wanted to make sure he would be okay. 

You chuckle and think, Now I understand, as he opens his mouth to speak.

In a serious tone, far from his usual aloof or teasing tone, he asks, "What... was that? Back there... one moment I just got shot and you were whispering to yourself.... the next you're slumped against a crate and Skye is working her healing magic. I swear, your eyes were glowing too, and not the usual amount."

When you don't reply, he adds, "You said something about time standing still."

Sighing, you tell him what happened.

"I'm not sure what actually happened. I was thinking that if I had more time, or if it would just stand still I could do something and the five of us could get home alive, and I guess I said it aloud because my hand started glowing." After pausing to think about how to explain something that you yourself don't quite understand, you continue.

"So I said it again, and it glowed brighter. I said it again, and one moment you were moving and the next you weren't. I just kinda dragged you over to Skye, when time started moving again and you know the rest."

Yoru asks you to not use your power too much. "And seeing as how you were tired after using your power that much, you shouldn't do it much."

You remember feeling exhausted when Skye was healing Yoru as well as the headache that felt like it would split your head in half. "But I guess Skye's healing magic'd it away." Yeah, you're right about that, you think as you nod.

"Anyways, we're here. Better get Sage to check on you," you say.

"But actually. What are you doing here?" he asks, the seriousness gone from his voice.

"Oh, don't mind me. I just wanted Sage to check me and see if I'm okay," you reply and smile at him.

While waiting for Sage to finish healing Yoru, you thought about radiant powers and what they do to someone who is unprepared to control them.

After Yoru leaves, you go inside and tell Sage everything that had happened out there, as well as about your headaches that seemed to get triggered by nothing in particular. You didn't forget to mention those two times in the past when you were using your powers and then you kinda just fell over.

The Chinese healer remains silent for a moment, then slowly says, "I believe you've unlocked a new ability. Although it seems to have taken a lot out of you, so please be careful with using that. The headaches should pass after a bit."

You thank her, then leave to go eat with Killjoy, Raze, and Neon. Also to make fun of Phoenix and Jett

some time later

"So what, exactly, did you want to show me?" you ask, curious as to why the riftwalker dragged you outside before dawn.

"Look up, and then tell me," Yoru replies, snarky as usual. 

A flash of light on the horizon makes you look up. When you do, you see lights streaking across the sky. "It's..... beautiful," you say, lost for words.

Laughing, Yoru replies, "Thought you might say that. There's something else that I wanted to show you though."

"Oh? And what might that be?" you ask, tearing your gaze away from the sky to look at the man standing next to you. 

In his hand is a small blue crystal, strung onto a thin leather cord. 

You smile at him and tie it around your neck. The crystal feels cold against your skin, like Yoru's hands always are. "Thank you," you say, hugging him.
