Tris POV
Today has really nice lessons: Music, Maths, English, Chemistry, Free Period, German, French and History.
Susan and I walk to music together and find that, for once, we are one of the last ones there. Ms Wu is at the front - apparently lost in her own world - all the popular prople at the back and everyone else slotted in between. "Alright class. Today we are going to do improvisation. I will put you into groups and then you will have 5 minutes to create a main theme and a backing. From there you will improvise. So: Four, Christina, Tris and Will. Zeke, Uriah, Marlene and Shauna. Drew, Susan, Molly and Edward. Lauren, Nita, Eric and Peter."
At once I feel awkward. I know that Christina and Will are dating and that Four thinks I am worthless. But I trust Ms Wu.
"Hi I am Tris. Should we start then?" I say with a sheepish smile. Chris replies instantly with: sure! Then she stares at me for a little longer and her eyes light up. "Omg you're that girl I bumped into on the first day! I'm so sorry, that incident was totally my bad. Why didn't you stay to introduce yourself.?"
"I thought you'd be angry."
"You thought I'd be angry Tris? You judged me wrong-" Will cut into her babbling and said. Alright shall we start then?"
"Yeah." I reply. I stamp my foot in a steady rhythm and click with my right hand and clap twice and repeat it. The others join in with their own rhythms and it sounds EPIC! I end up giggling a bit because it's so fun but then I go quieter and the others follow my actions. I start to hum a simple melody and repeat it when everyone stops. So I abruptly stop as well and blush a little.
"Why are you so talented Tris?" Christina says
"Hmmm? I am not!!!" I retort
"Yes you are Tris." Four rumbles, like the hungry belly of a great beast. I blush even redder and say, "Ummm shall we try that again maybe?" I say.
"Yeah!"
So I start it off and do 2 rounds, then the others come in and we do 4 rounds then I start to hum the same tune. It actually sounds good!
"Alright then class. You have had your 5 minutes. Four, your group can go first."
I inhale deeply and tap my foot four times then I start my rhythm. The rhythm builds up so I hum in a low tone. On the repeat of my tune I sing louder and Christina improvises:
You feel fear but there is nothing to be feared.
You feel hate when there's no one there to hate you.
Only you know your limits so try to reach them, don't be shy!
Because you know I will always be there for you til the day I die.By know I know Christina's tune and Will and Four are singing my backing so I harmonise with Christina (humming because I can't predict her words) in 3rds and 4ths and 5ths and 6ths it sounds amazing. I get lost in my harmonies and make them more and more inticate until I can't hear Christina so I bring them to a close and signal for everyone to stop their rhythms.
Silence waves all around the room then the whole class, except for Lauren, breaks out in claps and cheers. I can't help but smile as I go back to my seat.
Susan comes and whispers in my ear, "you're so lucky!" So I reply
"Good luck Susan. Believe in yourself because I know that however diabolical your group is, you can make it great."
"Thanks Bea!" She beams at me. Then Ms Wu calls up her group and they perform. They have just got a simple rhythm and Edward is playing on the piano a simply modulating chord sequence. Nita and Lauren are singing (well it sounds more like a constipated whale!) And Susan is just standing there clicking. When it comes to their chorus, Susan attempts to harmonize which, well let's just say, was a good first attempt. It was in tune, mostly. The other groups are tiresome and frankly rubbish so I can't wait to get out of the class.
Maths is dull but I have high hopes for English because we are doing yet more improvisation but this time we have to improvise a 5 minute play. I am put in a group with Susan and Christina and whilst the others get to know each other, I try to puzzle out a good ish script.
The story is set in a zoo. 3 cousins went (from a foreign country) there on a day trip and got locked in. They didn't go with their families just as a group of 3. So one if them resorted to survival instinct, another ran away, scared, and the third puzzled over how they must escape. The first got arrested for killing something that wasn't their own property, the second one got lost and was bitten by a monkey through the bars and the third one escaped. That will have to do. So I call the others over and brief them on the story line and by that time our teacher tells us that time is up.
During the other performances, I whisper to the others telling them that we should all narate at appropriate times in the story but when showing the actual scene, we mime and use physical theatre. Whilst the naration is happening everyone holds their position in a freeze frame.
"Right, Susan Bea and Christina, up you come." Like in music, I take a big, deep breath and step up to the stage. I am the "smart" one by their vote so Christina is the "brave" one who kills the animal annd Susan is the "scared" one who runs away. So we all sit down on the floor and start.
"We were on an outing to the zoo. Just me and my 2 cousins, Susan and Christina, until we were locked in. There we were, enjoying a day out abroad when we managed to get ourselves locked in. I tried to find a way to get out. Maybe we could climb over? Or trigger the alarm systems? No that would only get us in trouble." I said. I sit down to indicate that they should give their blurbs.
"I Christina, was stupid, survival instict was my only idea. I was scared so I killed the zebra I mean they're like horses aren't they? But I was sure to get caught." She sat down.
Then Susan came up. "I don't know. I was scared so I ran away. And lost the others." I nod at her to tell her she did well and we go into a scene where Susan leaves us. Then we turn into walls and jeep changing position whenever she passes us. Then we materialise into the tank where the monkey bit Susan, we reach out and pinch her arm then we turn into a wall again as Susan slumps against us.
Then Susan and I create a zebra between us and Christina walks into us. We start walking around when she throws a pen at us and so we clutch each other in pain and collapse away from each other.
Then comes my scene. The others create the large metal gate infront of me and I realise that I could climb the tree and throw my ruler between the tree and the wall and tie it to the branch with a hair band. So in the play I whisper to Susan that I am going to have to climb on her back.
I scramble up her back then I leap frog over her head and onto the floor and come out of it in a forward roll to stop myself from hurting myself. Then a walk away. We all come back in stage in neutral and I say, "That, my friends, is the end of our story. Susan got bitten by a monkey and went to hospital. Christina was put on trial for killing property that wasn't hers and I escaped and lived to regret it, I lost my cousins." Then we bow and exit the stage. There is silence then the whole room simultaneously erupts into a round of applause, our English teacher even stretcges to give us a standing ovation. I smile and high-five the other two but Christina glares at me.
"You're so good at everything. It's not fair. You're amazing at everything!" Christina complains sourly and she stomps off, making me feel hollow.A/N Long chapter today.
