WALKMAN MUSICALS
a story by edexhell

FROM THE SUMMER OF '76, to the end of middle school in '82, musicals were created in the Thompson backyard.

Of course, each of the four girls involved had a different role to play. Tammy Thompson, as musically aware as she was, spent hours listening to the radio in search of the perfect song. She would wait — full from excitement and the bitter taste of homemade lemonade — with a keen ear for a tune that went along with the narrative, scribbling down what she thought were the names of each song whenever she found one she liked. Her spelling was never entirely there ( and her choices left a lot to be desired ), but she never failed to create a page full of options she could bring to class.

Her twin sister, Adelade Thompson, then found herself with the tricky job of filling in the gaps. She was far less creative than her sister ( a trait her parents were rather pleased about for the majority of their childhood ), but she had a strange affiliation for puzzles. She enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and thrived during mental maths for some time before other things caught her fickle attention. Addie could turn any array of pop songs into a compelling plot. All she asked for in return was a leading role in their musical alongside her best friend. Nobody minded. The group was far too young to care about group dynamics or who stole the spotlight. Least of all Addie's suspicious fondness for Heather Holloway.

Heather would always be their lead actress. She could hold a tune — to the dismay of Tammy, who considered herself a great singer — and in Addie's opinion, looked mesmerising under the fake lights set up by Emma Carlton ( the fourth member of the group ). Now Emma was an excellent singer. She often took the role of the antagonist because Addie made sure the villain had all of the best solo songs. Each Sunday, after all of their hard work and meticulous planning, the group would perform to any parent who had the patience to watch them. It was a little strange ( especially when they sang along to a mixtape created by Adelade ), but it worked.

That was until the group reached high school.

Then, the four friends began to set their intentions elsewhere. One began to ruin their carefully curated reputation with an unlikely crush on the school freak. Another set her sights on Nashville with the goal of leaving Hawkins and her sister behind her. The third lost their life long before any plans could be set. And the last — the poor soul who recently discovered another dimension in her nuclear neighbourhood  — was destroyed by grief and her true self.

What a musical ( accompanied, of course, by Walkman classics) that would be. If only Addie would write it.
