Chapter 2

Nathan's POV

I saw the man leaning over my mum. I didn't know what to do, surprisingly this hasn't happened before.

"Get away from her!" I yelled, panicked.

The man dropped my mum and ran. I lifted her and helped her walk home. When we got there I helped her up the steps and into her room to go to bed. I didn't bother changing her into her pajamas because she was hardly wearing anything; only a ripped up tank top that was exposing her bra, and some skimpy shorts that I has no idea she owned. I do the laundry so I would have seen them before, and they're defiantly not new.

I'm so worried about her, she's high, again. Sadly, that doesn't surprise me. Thank god she only had a few bruises and a black eye. Sadly, it's been worse.

I left her room and decided to get something to eat in the kitchen, which was usually empty.

I decided to just have a cold pizza from a few days ago we had in the fridge. I took a few bites then got a can of soda. I gulped it down while wondering who that man was and what he was trying to do to my mum. Looking at the clock I saw that is was 12:20, and I went to my room and got ready for bed.

I walked into my small room. It was cluttered with clothes, and random irrelevant items like a phone charger, deodorant and a comb.

I heard my phone beep so I opened it up and saw a text from Kenzie, great.

"Hey babe. ;)"

I wasn't in the mood for her pointless flirting, so I didn't reply.

"Beep"

"Beep"

"Beep"

"Ring"

I heard it over and over again. Kenzie was calling and texting me all night but I still didn't want to answer. Doesn't she ever sleep?

Finally, I guess she gave up trying to contact me and went to sleep.

I woke up to the ringing of my alarm and quickly searched the floor for some clothes. I choose a red polo top and some jeans. I sauntered into the kitchen and found my mom reading a newspaper. I got a bowl of lucky charms and started shoveling spoonfuls of it into my mouth while sitting on the couch next to my mum.

Then I asked, "Mum how did that happen? Where were you? You've been coming home like this for weeks."

"Uh...it was nothing" she said.

"It wasn't nothing mum, what happened?" I demanded.

"I said nothing!" she snapped.

"Mum." I said sternly.

"I've been going out to bars lately" she admitted.

"And? What happened with that man last night?" I questioned.

"He's been raping me for a few weeks already."

"Mum! You still go to the bar?! Why?" I said, worry in my voice.

"I don't know, Nate" she said quietly

I glanced at the clock and realized it was five minutes to eight. I was going to be late for school, lovley.

"Shit, I have to go mum I'm late. See you later, try not to get to drunk tonight and promise me you won't go to that bar again?" I say grabbing my bag.

"Okay, I'll try. I love you"

"Love you, too Mum, bye" and with that I ran to school and got there in twenty minutes.

I walked into the school building and started walking towards my locker.

"Why are you late Mr. Alexander?" Mr. Taylor, the school principal, said looking at me sternly.

"I over slept" I say.

"I see..." He said looking me up and down.

I start walking to my first period class, seeing that I was only 25 minutes late, but Mr.Taylor stopped me.

"Mr. Alexander you know very well you can not be late. You have a detention today after school."

"Yes sir" I say with a sigh

"Go to class"

And I hurried to Mrs. Benders room for math.

I walked over to the lunch table where I usually sit with Kenzie and my friends from basketball. No one was there yet. Good, some alone time for once.

"Babe, why didn't you answer the phone last night?" Kenzie says sitting down next to me.

"I didn't see it" I lied

"Oh, do you want to hang out after school?" she asked, putting on the sweetest face she could.

"Can't" I simply state with no emotion what so ever.

"Why?" she asked accusingly.

"Detention" I state simply.

"Can't you skip?"

"No" I say

"Tomorrow?" She begged.

"Maybe" I groaned, annoyed.

"Hey Nate." Josh Daniels, my best friend since eighth grade, said.

"Hi Josh" I say.

Soon enough my entire basketball team piled up at the table.

The entire school day dragged on slowly, and by the time the bell rang, I was pissed.

As I was walking home Nicki's mom, June, drove past me with Nicki in the passenger seat. June smiled at me and Nicki's eyes met mine. She quickly looked away.

When I got home, I already knew something was wrong, because the front door was wide open.
