Chapter 5
Nicki POV
I really have to stop this. I'm getting deeper and deeper every time. But this time, it's not my arm. I look down and see blood all over my lower abdomen. I know it may seem weird, but I smiled. The physical pain is so much better than the emotional pain. I sit up and wipe the blood with an old towel and just as I'm about to pick up the razor blade again Kyle walks in.
"Nicki, what are you doing?!" He shouts
"Don't you knock?!" I say angrily "Jesus, I can never get any alone time in this house!" I quickly pulled down my shirt, "You are always barging in and asking for my help! It doesn't look like you're the one that needs it." I snapped. I know I've gone too far, because Kyle walks out of my room holding back tears.
Kyle's POV
My back slides down the wall and I bring my knees to my chest. I don't know what to do now. I didn't mean to come in without knocking, it's a habit now because she never used to mind. What I saw was traumatizing. Nicki just wiped a lot of blood from her stomach. Why is she doing that? It's me isn't it? She's still cutting because I was talking to Nate at the pizza parlor yesterday! It has to be! Nicki hates him. I'll always remember the day she came home from her first day of 6th grade, even if I was only in first grade. She came home crying and told me and Mum all about it.
*flashback to the first day of 6th grade for Nicki*
Nicole Harper (Nicki) walks down the hallway laughing with, her best friend since kindergarten, Nathan Alexander (Nate). Nicki and Nate have lockers across from each other and as soon as Nicki turns her back to put in her combination, things go terribly wrong. For Nicki, that is. But everything goes according to plan for Kenzie Hampton, the snooty rich girl from California. Kenzie snakes her arm around Nathan's neck and turns on her charm, while her friends go after Nicki. They insult her looks, friends, and family. But what really got to Nicki was that they insulted Kyle. They called him a freak. They said he was going to grow up and kill Nicki. She knew it wasn't true, and the insults weren't that good, but still it's the thought that counts. Instead of standing up for herself she started crying and yelling for Nathan. But Kenzie had already dragged him off to her locker. The rest of the day went by with Nathan being forced to ignore Nicki, and with Nicki hurt, scared and confused. She didn't know what happened to Nathan, or what she did to those girls to deserve those insults. The bus ride home was the same, but instead of the worker bees doing Kenzie's dirty work, it was the queen bee herself, squashing Nicki until she was nothing. Nicki ran to her house crying, her Mum was waiting at the door for her and when she saw Nicki she was worried. She wrapped her daughter in her arms listening to what she had to say, completely unaware of the damage Kenzie and her friends had done, and because all Nicki told her was that she forgot how to get home from the bus stop and was worried she would never get home. What a huge lie that was. The only person that knows is Kyle, and he's sworn to secrecy.
*end of flashback*
Kyle's POV
I can't keep Nicki's secret anymore, I have to tell someone. I know it isn't safe to tell Mum because she's not in a good condition emotionally. Dad is in prison, Nicki hates Nathan and I can't trust anyone in my grade. Standing up and wiping tears from my eyes, I walk over to my desk and power up my laptop. I click on the internet explorer icon and type "Councilors in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania" into Google. A long list of ads and websites pop up and I click the first one.
