A/n: Hang on to your butts, this is a long one.

All I could picture was the field painted red with Pa's blood as we huddled together in an alley trying to stay dry from the rain. The landlady kicked us out of our flat not even two days ago because we were conned out of our money. I blame myself for our predicament. I knew this "Jakob Hertzoon" wasn't someone we could put our faith in, yet I said nothing until it was far too late. As the man of the family, Jordie thought it would be smart to invest all of our money into a single stock. Trusting the word of a merchant, if you could even call him that, we barely knew.

"What if it backfires?" I asked as we settled into our flat for the night.

"It won't," Jordie responded firmly.

"How are you so sure? We hardly know Jacob! What if he's lying to us Jordie. Just because we aren't in the barrel doesn't mean we are free of cons and cheats." I said, my voice rising a bit because of stress.

"Don't you dare compare Mr. Hertzoon to a con! He brought us in! Without him, we'd be sitting on the streets begging for scraps. He's a good man! He cares about us." Jordie yelled in response.

"This isn't the farm this is Ketterdam, Jordie, open your damn eyes! That man out there is not pa! Pa is dead!" I glared at him.

"I know damn well he ain't pa!" Jordie shouted. "I'm not looking for someone to tuck me in and kiss me good night. I'm just trying to save us."

"No! You're putting us in danger! You're putting Kaz in danger!" I shouted. Jordie's eyes flashed with hurt. I sighed, "I'm sorry I shouldn't have yelled. I promised pa I'd look after you two. I don't want to lose you to greed and arrogance."

Jordie sighed and looked down at the floor. "You won't lose us, y/n. Trust me."

I nodded. "I'm just worried that's all. We're a long way from the farm."

Jordie smiled and gave my arm a playful punch. "Don't worry, soon we'll be richer than merchants and you can buy a farm twice the size if you want."

I rolled my eyes and chuckled before ruffling his hair. "You and your optimism. It'll do some good to this city."

I lean my head back against the cold brick wall. All around us water forms small streams through the cracks in the stone alley. We're relatively dry under the small awning I found but that doesn't stop the cold that bites at our skin.

Jordie sits to my right. His arms are crossed above his knees and his coat is wrapped tightly around his shoulders. He shivers slightly yet declines sitting closer by claiming he's fine. Kaz is on my left. He sits tucked under my arm, his hands gripping my shirt in bundles trying to keep them warm. He shivers and I adjust my coat so it covers more of his small body.

"You can say it." Jordie mumbles.

"Say what?" I ask.

"'I told you so'. I know you want to." He looks away ashamed.

"I'm not gonna say that Jordie. I'm not mad at you. I could never be mad at you. I just knew this would happen." I reach my arm out and pull him closer. "All that matters now is that we look after each other. Okay?"

Jordie nods as he leans into my side.

The next day the sun is out and it dries the streets. An older lady found us and apparently we were too close to her house. She chased us away with the sharp end of a broken broomstick.
