"We must have lost track of time." Abby said, I stood up quickly looking worried.
"My parents can't see you, quickly you have to go!" she said rushing John and Paul out of the room.
"Where?" John said, grabbing his leather jacket from the peg, tossing Paul's to him.
"Err" Abby worriedly looked around, "out the back door, hurry." We all rushed into the kitchen where the backdoor was that opened onto the backyard.
"What about the shirts?" Paul asked, I remembered Abby had let them borrow a couple of Ben's.
"You can just give them back tomorrow or something I don't know, Ben won't even notice, just go!"
She practically pushed John out the door and Paul followed suit.
"Wait" Paul said and quickly slid past Abby back through the door. He approached me and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek then said "see you soon honey pie." And with that he was gone. Out the door and over the fence like John had moments before.
Then Abby and I heard a key in the front door and it opened quickly after.
"There isn't enough time!" I hissed to Abby, "I can't jump over that fence like they did!"
"Okay, okay just stay here and we'll act normal" she whispered back, quickly shutting the backdoor and walking to the hall to meet her parents.
"Evening Abigail" her mother said, she always called her Abigail.
"Hey" she said casually.
"What did we tell you about that?" Her father said sternly.
"Hello" Abby said, through gritted teeth.
"Hello Michelle, what are you doing here?" Abby's mother said as if she had only just noticed I was there, "Abigail you know you're not supposed to have friends around you've got to focus on schoolwork remember?"
"It's Michelle" Abby said, like that meant it was okay.
"All the same you should run along now dear."
"I was just off Mrs Bennicoff" I said timidly, going over to take my coat off the peg and pick up my bag, though in truth I needed to speak to Abby urgently. I guessed it would just have to wait until tomorrow.
"Bye" Abby said reluctantly as she hugged me before I left.
"Bye" I reciprocated. At least the rain had died down a bit by now but that didn't mean I felt any better inside.
I walked home slowly, going over everything that had happened today in my head. Seeing Paul again, finding out that maybe I never really had him... I wondered if what Abby had written was true — was Paul seeing another bird behind my back that week that I couldn't see him? Maybe he had got sick of waiting and found someone else. I had never been in a situation like this before so I didn't quite know how to react. All I could think of was talking to Abby. I felt a small tear trickle down my cheek and I wiped it away. You tears stay away now, until I get home at least I told them.
I felt myself rushing home all of a sudden, anxious to get to my room and have some privacy.
"Hey sweetie" Dad called as I opened the front door, "have a nice day?"
"Yeah it was good" I managed to say, trying to put on a normal voice so Dad wouldn't suspect anything. If he saw me he would know something was up.
"I just have to use the loo" I said, rushing upstairs. But really I made a left at the bathroom and went straight to my room closing the door quietly and going over to sit on my floor, back resting against my bed.
