And just like that, July was over. And August came flying in way too fast. Yet inevitably unstoppable. Lilly's time got slimmer. And, just like the doctor predicted, her condition worsened. I hated that the doctor was right. Mostly because I couldn't help but wonder, if the doctor was right about this... Would he be right about her timestamp?
I repressed the sick thought to the best of my abilities. I was never much of a firm believer of things that couldn't be factually proven. Yes, I had doubts, like everyone else, but this was no exception. Until I knew for sure, as far as I knew, the doctor is wrong. Everyone was wrong.
I couldn't predict life. Because I knew it would find another way to surprise me again.
I knew Lilly was gradually getting worse. Although she'd try her best to hide it. All the times she'd lay in bed, restless in pain. Or how she began eating less, and having to sit down more when we went for walks through the city. She'd excuse it as simply being tired, but I saw through her clearer that a bay window.
Although I acted like I had no idea. I let her think she was fooling me. She was too stubborn to tell me the truth. It was mainly because she didn't want me to worry. If she knew I was worried, it would only cause her more stress. And I obviously didn't want that. So I kept my eye on her, but from a distance.
We started walking more. Sometimes late at night. Or super early in the morning when she didn't feel like sleeping. Or when it rained. She always had to go out when it rained.
Any chance she got to get out of the house, she took. And I followed her without hesitation.
August was a tough month for me. It was as if I could feel everything. Every tiny drop in temperature. Every little shift of cold air. That smell of autumn coming in sometimes on our walks. It made me cringe. The thought of autumn made me sick.
I found myself checking the weather channel more. Mentally breaking down everytime the meteorologist mentioned fall. The season I dreaded most. The season I didn't think Lilly would be here for. I knew I couldn't predict that she wouldn't last past September. But I kept having to give myself pep talks. Telling myself that she would see one more season. That she would see the leaves change one more time. But I'd turn the weather channel off before I over thought it.
Because just like the doctors, just like me, the weather man can't predict Lilly's time.
August 12th was our four month anniversary. Not the anniversary of our relationship. But the anniversary of when I first saw her. Of when my cab almost ran her over.
Its crazy to think that we've dated for less than that time. I felt like, with all we've been through together, that it's been years. I guess that's when you know you're in love. Time goes fast when you're with her, but when you look back, it feels like centuries have passed.
And I still begged for more time.
Anyways, our anniversary. I knew Lilly enough to know, there would be no restaurant reservations. No formal clothing. No ordinary date measures that girls usually loved.
She was different. Her idea of a fairytale night was a bottle of her favorite wine, and all the Beatles songs she could play.
I loved that she was simple. Every guy loves that about a girl. Knowing you don't have to go out of your way to please her.
But I needed to. I needed to go out of my way. Because in my mind. She was too special not to. The time we had was too special not to.
So our plans for that night, would go like this: I'd take her to Patterson's Pedals, sneaking In through the back enterance, like we've done so many times this summer. Then I'd show her the first surprise. Even though she'd be mad because we promised we wouldn't get each other anything. And I'd have to kiss her to shut her up. Then, telling by the weather channel that I've been watching all week, we'd go up to the roof. And dance in the rain a little. Until her last surprise arrived. And the last surprise will take up the rest of our night. Actually, the rest of our weekend.
