CHAPTER 6

She sighed, pulling down the blue dress that was a bit too tight for her liking. Zoe had barely managed to find a dress in time, arriving at 6:25 exactly. She absolutely hated being late, but her brother's shenanigans had stopped her from arriving at her preferred time.

Zoe nervously walked through the arching brown doors, the music blasting. It drowned out the chatter of teenagers, but some were loud enough to be heard as they screamed over the music.

She heard an array of curses, followed by aggravating laughter. The music was making her anxious, and soon her heart was drumming loudly in her chest. She had to push her way through people who were assumedly drunk, turning down a shady dude who offered her a cup.

Greatly disappointed, Zoe made her way to the back of the room, walking straight past the couple who were making out on a couch. She wrinkled her nose in disgust at a pile of vomit on the floor, deciding to find a bedroom to seek refuge in.

She didn't think to knock, as no one would have heard it anyways, so she slowly opened the door. Afraid of what might lie behind, she squinted her eyes. Inside, there was a blonde boy sitting on the edge of the giant bed in the middle of the room. He looked shaken up, and as he turned to look at her she realized it was Evan.

As she closed the door, the music was thankfully muffled. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, walked over and sat down a few inches away from him. Zoe waved, a slight smile spreading across her face.

"You all alone?" She had to project her voice over the music, even though it was muffled. Evan nodded, giving her a delicate and awkward smile back. Feeling a buzz of adrenaline surge through her limbs, doing something she normally wouldn't do. Complement a boy.

"You look really nice," Her smile widened, a small giggle of nervousness escaping her lips. She could see Evan's eyes widen ever so slightly, his cheeks becoming a shade of maroon. Zoe laughed, another complement slipping from her lips.

"And you look cute when you blush." She nudged his shoulder, grinning brightly. His hair was a nice lavender under the purple lights, and he glanced at his hands nervously as he stammered out a short thank you.

Another person entered the room, someone she didn't recognize. Evan did, though. He quickly ran up to the guy, who was dressed in a red button-up.

"Jared!" He exclaimed, a relieved expression washing over his face. She felt a twinge of jealousy, though brushed it off and replaced it with a polite smile.

She met his eyes, greeted by a glare. She quickly pieced together the situation they were in. By the way he had protectively wrapped his arm around Evan's arm, she could tell they were together.
