Jackie knocked on the desk of Officer Claggor, and he barely glanced at up before tossing her the keys. "Don't let anyone else out," he grunted, and continued flipping the pages of the newspaper.
It was frankly disappointing, both the levels of trust he had in her and the things that had to go down for those levels to get there. Not only disappointing, it was disturbing.
Jackie walked past the other cells and came to a stop at the one at the end. Her boyfriend was sitting on his ass inside, on the little stone bench that may as well have his name carved into it at this point for the amount of time he spent on it. His hat was tipped over his eyes, but even with the snores, Jackie knew he was faking it.
"Hook, I swear to god, if ya don' getcha sorry self up right now I'm gonna come in there an' give ya an ass-beatin' you won't soon forget."
He perked up until she could see the glint of his eyes beneath brown tufts of hair "In a kinky way?"
"No, ya filthy son of a gun."
He sighed and stood up, sweeping his hat off his head as he went. "It's not me fault, lass, the people here don' understand the meaning of good fun." He ruffled his hand through his hair as he spoke, and no man on earth had the right to look that attractive when he was supposed to be getting scolded.
She leaned as casually as she could against the steel bars. "Good fun, Hook, is not tha same 'ere as it was on tha isle. Ya can't just embezzle an' steal-" she stopped briefly. "Or was it trespassing?"
"Breakin' an' entering." He smirked and put his hat back on.
"See? that, that's exactly the kinda shit ya can't pull 'ere, Hook! Do ya have any idea how much the bail money alone is diggin' into your funds?"
"Ta hell with funds!" he threw his hands in the air. "I don' give a shit Jackie! I don' want ta follow their bloody rules, if a few extra bucks is tha price to pay fer that, i'm more than willin' ta pay it!"
"I know, Harry." She shook her head and picked the key to his cell of the ring (disappointed yet again by how familiar it was) and unlocked the door, walking into the cell. "It's just- I can't keep doin' this. I know it's not easy. Hades, love, do ya think this has been easy for me? I killed people, for christ's sake!"
Her voice dropped. "I just- I just want us to better. Happy. I want to find a way ta fit inta this world here, into the opportunities here. And I want to do that with you." She looked up to see that he had moved closer to her, and now stood a breath away.
"You can't do that from inside a cell, Hook."
He put a calloused hand on her shoulder and pulled her in. She took a shaky breath and was enveloped by the smell of the sea, cyprus, and iron and dirt- a feeling of home.
"I'm sorry, lass," he said into her hair. "I didn' know- I need ta rethink my priorities. I don't fit in here. You know that."
He pulled away a little but until she could see his face, but he kept his hand in her hair and his arms around her back. "I want those things too. I guess I never thought about wha' it would take to make 'em true."
She smiled softly at him and put her forehead to his. "Ya know I'm not mad, Hook. I love you."
He sighed and pulled her back in for that bone-crushing hug, his rings pressing in to the back of her head. "I love you too, lass." He could be better. For her, for their future together, he would be better.
She exhaled into his shoulder. They were always going to be different- but someday they could be different and free.
His breath brushed her ear. "Ya know, yer accent gets really bad when you're pissed."
He voice was muffled against his jacket. "Is that a bad thing?"
"No. I quite like it."
She leaned out and looked up at him through her lashes with a small smile. "Then maybe I'll get pissed more often." She stood up on to her toes and inclined her head to give him a kiss-
The intercom crackled loudly and the night officer's voice came through the speaker. "Get yourselves home, lovebirds. I don't got all night."
"Read your newspaper, Claggor!"
