Cup of Blood

“Greetings…” she smiled, placing the menu on my table.

She was the same lady who gave me the free coupons. She had her brown hair tied up in a bun, same as usual and the name plate on the apron read: Farah.

“Thanks”

Farah smiled back again and headed for the counter. I looked around the café and no one was there yet. The cuckoo clock on the far end of the room said 5:45 pm. I checked my wrist watch and it said the same thing.

…sigh…

I kept looking around and out the window, wondering when and where he is. But each time I turned my head around and in each time I thought he’d be there, he wasn’t. What was I even thinking rushing here anyway? It’s not like I can just go ahead and ask him: ’Did you kill my father?’…and it’s not like I can just tell him I had hunter’s blood in me.

6:15 pm.

The horizon was covered in red orange clouds and the sun had already dipped low when I looked up again. I had fallen asleep on my elbows while I waited for Yuuzel to finally arrive. But he still wasn’t there.

“Here…”

Farah placed a cup of tea on the table.

“Something to keep you company.” She smiled again.

“Thankyou” I said, slowly raising the cup to my lips. I sipped on it and looked out the window again.

“Y’know, Master Yuuzel might not be able to meet you tonight.”

Farah sat down on the chair adjacent to me. Wait. She-

“You know him?”

Farah smiled again, this time, it was a different sort of smile. She grinned sardonically and twisted the loose curls from the back of her ears.

“You…” I felt my throat go dry for some reason.

“Hush…” she said, patting the back of my hand.

I – I felt my eyes gone heavy and chest even heavier. Next, my head was heavier than anything in the world…And then…

BLANK…

…..

“…..By…..”

      Wha…

“…..Ru…by….”

     What?

My eyelids were still heavy and my entire body ached all over, as if I was numbed and something heavy was on top of me.

“Don’t bother waking her, Mister Hunter… the tranquilizer I mixed in her tea should last until past midnight.”

I heard the same voice that greeted me just a while ago…Farah!

My little finger twitched but I was able to control it. My body wanted to stay numb, my heart wanted me to wake up but I scolded my mind into pretending to be still asleep.

“You won’t get away with this! I already called AVS; operatives will be hunting you down soon!”

   Wa-was that Sub?

“Hah! I’m not stupid hunter! I would just have to change locations again. There’ll be a number of customers tonight. Your friends won’t be able to make a move out in the open now won’t they?”

I heard Farah’s footsteps as she walked toward me. The beats on the ground sounded hollow, faint at first and then thumping, louder…nearer. And then it stopped. She stood near my face as I kept my eyes shut.
