SAID DADDYS HOMEEEE
The Random Store Joyce Works At
Before going to the kids, I decide to get some food for the house so I don't inevitably die of starvation. I try to summon the weird distant memories my brain has of this world and bike to the first store I can remember. Joyce's work place.
After what feels like an hour of peddling, I arrive at the store and head in.
I grab some chips, drinks, soup cans, noodles, sauce, and some fruit. Ooh, maybe some candy too.
*ding ding*
"Joyce, I wasn't expecting you today. I brought Jeffery in to cover." I'm guessing the manager says.
"I'm not here to work. I... The storm last night, I..." Joyce stammers while walking past the man. "I need a new phone." She sighs.
I silently watch from behind an isle like a creep and wait for her to go to the cash register. I know they don't have a lot of money right now, and I ain't afraid to be nobody's sugar daddy.
"Okay, that will be $22.56." The manager dude says.
"Uh, yeah, you know, uh... I gave Jonathan all my money for..." Joyce starts to explain before I cut her off.
"Oh, Hey Joyce! Isn't that some money in your pocket?" I say while gesturing at her pocket.
"What?" She questions me with a confused look before reaching into her pocket.
"Oh, I... I guess there is. Here you go, Donald." Joyce gives him the money, and then sent me a 'we're gonna have a talk' look.
He takes the money, looks at both of us strangely, and then hands her the receipt.
He then checks my stuff then yatta yatta yatta.
I turn around to exit the store before hearing Joyce call out to me.
"Raine!"
"Yes?" I answer with a knowing smile.
"Uh, I just wanted to say thank you... But you have to stop giving us your money! It makes me, I don't know! Feel bad? You're a kid! You should be using it to buy new cassette deck or roller skates." She says with an exasperated sigh.
I pull her into a well deserved hug.
"Joyce, you are the most strong, kindest, and amazing woman I know. You've done so much for your kids, so let me help you. Plus, Jonathan is kind of my best friend." I explain to her.
She wipes a tear and kisses my forehead.
"What would we do without you?" She says before looking at my ride.
"You rode your bike here?" She questions me with a worried look.
"Yeah... I don't really have anything else..." I answer sheepishly.
"Come on, i'll give you a ride." She says while grabbing some of my bags, so that I can grab my bike.
"I remember when you just moved to Hawkins. Jonathan just turned eight, and was having a birthday party that afternoon." Joyce recalls.
"I knew he wasn't the most popular kid, I mean he always had trouble making friends. But it truly broke my heart when the party started, and no one showed up. It hurt even worse for him to have to look up at me and say, 'It's okay mom, no one's coming.' I was going to tell Lonnie to get off his ass and take him and Will to the arcade.... Well that was until you showed up. Tiny pink bicycle, your hair was in piggy tails, and you brought him a tiny present." She said while turning to look at me.
