Matthew explained everything.
Somehow, it took the best part of an hour, especially as my mum decided to be the awkward parent and check in on us in my bedroom every ten minutes.
Elementis' are humans that have an extra gene passed down genetically through family lines. Matty didn't know the specifics, but basically it means that you have enhanced connections to a certain element, which allows you to control and manipulate it. He also explained that the gene often skips a few generations, which is why his parents and grandparents don't have the power, but he does. Apparently, no-one is really sure why this happens, or even how it started, but I know I like to think that we're all X-men (it's a shame it's not, that would be awesome!).
Mostly, the gene that is passed down is only linked only to one element, so there are generations of the same family all being able to control only the one element. If it is one of the main four elements, then you are simply known as an ordinary Elementis, which is stupid (says Matthew) because sub-Elementis' are more common. However, there are rare cases in which a child is born with more than one elemental gene, called a dual-elementis. Children with sub-elemental genes are a lot more common than kids who have power over one of the main four elements, but they can be just as powerful. Sub-elementis' are born when, like a normal Elementi, a human and a sub-elementis have children together. However, because the sub-elemental gene isn't dominant, the child can just end up being another sub-elementis or a human. If a normal Elementis has a child with a human, the child will retain that Elementis power as the gene is dominant.
When two different Elementi have a child, that child becomes one of two options: it can either end up as a normal Elementis having inherited one of it's parents elements, or it can control both as a blend which makes the child extremely dangerous. Every dual elemental child takes on different attributes, so no two have the same powers- even if they can manipulate the same elements.
When I asked him why his eyes changed, all he told me was that "the eyes are the windows to the souls" and then he laughed. He can be so annoying sometimes. But then he became serious again, and explained that the eyes just reveal your element because they are linked directly to the brain, which emits the power through the eyes and outward. Also, if you're any type of Elemental, then your eyes are actually protected from every other element type as well. So, at least I know if I'm burning to death my eyeballs will remain, which is not particularly a comforting thought.

After our long talk, and Matthew had checked that I wasn't going to faint, we lie together on my bed and just talk. I don't complain about how hot his skin is against my arm, and he doesn't complain about how cold I am, so it works out well. He asks me how much I had planned for my future, and tells me that we can still work towards our dream careers, it just might take a little longer. He seems pretty happy to finally have someone he is really close to at his school.
"Rach, you honestly don't understand how boring a 15 hour long flight is when you're sat alone on a plane with limited books to read! Its torture! But the academy has this huge library with practically all glass walls and a glass ceiling, and its beautiful! Oh you are going to love it!" I smile and continue to gaze up at the cheap, plastic, glow-in-the-dark stars I stuck to my ceiling in year three, as I listen to him rambling on.
Its nice to have him back home. We used to be pretty close until he got accepted to the boarding school, and I still like to think that he opens up more to me than Alexis. Oh, that's another thing- Matthew goes to an academy on a Hawaiian island just for Elementis'. As the scene in the pool confirmed my powers, apparently I should be getting an invite any day soon...

Hello! Hope everyone is okay, this is a kind of explanatory chapter to clear a few things up. Although, this is just a bit of a mess that I've thrown together (sorry)
