It was the day after my birthday. Collei needed to go back to UST after visiting so he didn’t say overnight here. I kinda miss him. I always needed him by my side. Ok, I know. I sound a bit selfish but I think, I just wish he was always here.
I heard the door open. It was Kelsey. I stole a peek from downstairs and I saw her talking to our parents. If I could just make out of a few words they were talking, maybe I should know if Kelsey’s getting scolded or not. My mom is very persistent about birthdays, especially mine.
“Hey, dress up. My boyfriend’s coming to dinner,” Kelsey said while walking up the stairs. I nodded in silence but then I realized, Kelsey has a boyfriend. She never told me about anything about her love life. She was always so private about her personal matters that sometimes, mom and dad don’t even know what she does in her personal life. We only saw one side of Kelsey. But, I felt like Kelsey was a bit off. Kelsey was bubbly, but now she’s more serious. I brushed it off, thinking it’s just because her boyfriend’s going to be here.
I was putting myself something decent to meet Kelsey’s boyfriend. It was supposed to be easy for me but I don’t know what Kelsey’s boyfriend looks like so I got out with the most decent and neutral thing I could think off. A blue polo with pants that blend in with it. I heard the doorbell rang. I ran downstairs to meet my sister’s boyfriend but to my surprise, Kelsey was already there. Isn’t she supposed to be in her room? I saw the guy that was Infront of me. They both kissed right Infront of me.
“Oh babe, your sibling’s here,” he told me. I was just standing there, stunned. They broke off the kiss to look at me. I walked to the kitchen, feeling a little embarrassed to see that whole thing happening right in front of my eyes. It was horrifying, even though I also do it with Collei.
“Hello, welcome to our household. I’m Mrs. Sylvia Degamo, you can just call me Mrs. Degamo,” my mother approached the guy who we thought was Kelsey’s boyfriend. My mother let the guy inside our house and let him sat right next to Kelsey which is the seat right in front of me.
“Hi, I’m Justin. Nice to meet you all,” he said. I analyzed him. Tall with black hair and I looked closely at his lip, it wasn’t bleeding but it looked like it had a scratch. I deduced it was from a woman’s scratch from her nails. I looked at Kelsey’s nails but there wasn’t any skin fragments from it. And then, I noticed her arm. She was wearing a long sleeved dress so no one can notice that her arms was filled with wounds. I held her arm to look at it more closely.
“Stop it, Axton,” she told me. I stopped. It was stupid to think that she, out of people, wouldn’t break up a relationship if she knew it can harm her. Maybe, I’m just over reacting right. I stopped immediately and waited for my mother to elevate the mood.
“So, Justin. What do you do?” she asked him. Justin looked up to answer to my mother who was obviously waiting for him to answer. He stopped eating the pork and looked up at mother. “I’m taking engineering, third year,” he said. He’s in third year, what I expect for Kelsey.
Kelsey had a type. She liked older guys like a lot. She always said to me that if she ever gets a boyfriend, it should be older than her. I just hope they would be compatible with each other. I mean, you saw the wounds in her arm, right? Kinda weird.
“Engineering, wow. So, how’s the course, young man?” my father asked. My dad was intrigued with the word engineering. In fact, he wanted to take engineering but room up business instead since it pays more. He always looked after us and thought what was best for Kelsey and I.
“You know, it’s more or less a life and death situation in the site,” both of them laughed. We laughed too, to not make it seem like awkward to then that they are the only ones who laughed at a joke that the new guy made. I continued eating my pork.
“Oh dear, why do you have that mark on your lip? Did you get hurt?” my mother asked. Finally, someone noticed that mark on the left side of his lip. It looked like the wound was too recent like they just met a few hours ago. Was she in their house right before she came home?
“Oh, I was trying to shave a little before and the blade hit on the side of my lip,” he explained. He looked like he was lying. I mean, who would shave on that side of their cheek and besides, there aren’t any signs of him shaving. Did he wax instead? I was contemplating myself. I think I’m overthinking the situation. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about, right? It’s just one little scratch. Nothing happened with just one scratch. It’s none of my business now on what happens in their relationship so I should just back off. After dinner, Justin asked to leave. He said he had an urgent project to finish. We all agreed to finish and send him in his merry way. Kelsey was the one who opened the door for him and Justin walked outside, thanking her. They both kissed on the front porch while my parents were here.
“Call me, huh?” Kelsey asked. Justin nodded and went on to ride his black bike. I just noticed his bike right outside our front porch. “When did you met him and when did you start dating, Kelsey?” I asked her. I was a little bit worried for her.
“Right after summer, don’t worry about it,”
