Another day on the job and it was always the same. Heavy traffic, several crimes, and not enough time to solve them all. As a detective, I don't get paid enough for this shit. I ran a hand through my hair as I felt another wave of stress run over me as I pulled into my parking space at the department. Running fifteen minutes late was something that I did rather often, but with my excellent memory and the incredible amount of knowledge I possessed, no one has yet to say a word. I grabbed my phone from the cup holder as I kicked the driver-side door to my car shut.

"Jackson!" I turned to see my friend and fellow colleague, Adam, jogging toward me.

"Did you sleep here or something?" I teased as we began to walk toward the entrance of the department.

"Funny, jackass. At least I'm actually on time." I rolled my eyes at him before starting to jog up the front steps.

"It's not like they'd fire me." Adam threw his head back in laughter,

"Cocky much?"

I gave him a half-shrug before taking my keys and phone out of my pockets, along with my other metal-type valuables before stepping through the metal detector. Adam joined me on the other side before we began to walk toward my office.

"Did you hear about the meeting you're having today?" Adam asked from beside me.

"I received an email, but I'm not sure what it's for. Got any clue?" I asked him. We stopped in front of the elevator as we waited for it to reach my floor.

"According to Olivia, word is, the drug ring is back. This time, it's worse." I flashed my eyes over to him to see that he stood like a statue, just waiting for my response.

"How bad?"

"I'm not sure, but if that's what the meeting is about then I guess you'll find out soon enough."

Suddenly, the elevator dinged and the doors soon opened, allowing everyone on board to exit. Adam and I entered not long after the last person exited, leaving us the chance to be crammed in the back behind several other employees. I hoped that what he said wasn't true, if so, then this is going to be a rather long day.

Once the elevator stopped on my floor, I hightailed to my office, leaving Adam to stop to kiss his girlfriend, Olivia, at her desk. I internally gagged at their lovey-dovey type relationship. With the way my life is, having a girlfriend was the least of my worries. Once I got to my office, I plopped down in my desk chair as I turned on my computer to begin my day.

"Jackson! Meeting in five!"

My boss, Doug, said as he passed by my office. I sighed heavily as I grabbed my coffee mug and headed straight for the meeting room where everyone else was going.

"Hi, Michael!" Tanya greeted me.

This was one of the many blind dates that I regret ever going to. She was a sweet girl, but I just didn't get anything out of it. There just wasn't a spark. Not only that, but we have absolutely nothing in common. Despite my decision to end things, she still had the thought in her head that we would be together.

"Hey, Tanya. How's it going?" I politely inquired to make conversation.

"Oh, you know how Fridays are. Do you have any plans this weekend?" And here it comes.

"I'm going to visit my family over in Encino this weekend. Why do you ask?" She twirled her brunette hair around her finger as she spoke.

"Well there was this little festival concert thing going on and I had an extra ticket." I nodded my head, completely unsure of what to say, but luckily my boss interrupted my contemplation.
