"And then I threw a water balloon right at her!" I exclaimed with tears of laughter in my eyes.
"All because she said that you had a big head?" Cassie questioned me amidst of her laughing.
"Yes! We've obviously grown closer since then, but I still remember when Janet decided to leave the innocence behind to become like my other two sisters." I rolled my eyes as I swigged back the last bit of my drink, allowing the laughter to die down.
"She seems like a good time." She ran her fingertips over the rim of her glasses with a smirk on her face.
"She's something alright. You two would get along very well." She laughed softly.
"You make it sound like a bad thing." Cassie squinted her eyes at me.
"Definitely not." I smiled at her.
"I would love to meet her."
Her voice was merely a whisper, but it was loud enough to hear the emotions hidden behind it. She glanced down at her drink and took a sip of the contents.
"I know she would love to meet you too. She's never met one of my girlfriends before." She raised an eyebrow at me.
"And why not?" I huffed out a sigh as I leaned back in my chair.
"I never really saw a reason to bring a girl around. I mean I've dated girls, as you know, but I've never dated one where I felt like I should introduce them to that part of my life. Meeting families is a big deal and to me it just didn't seem right to bring them home when I never saw a future." Cassie nodded her head as she broke her stare from me.
"I completely get that. I don't think Luke ever met my mom. He never met my father either, for obvious reasons of course." She chuckled grimly, but her demeanor changed as soon as she took notice of me noticing her change.
"Did your mom ever remarry? I recall my mother mentioning the Mckinnon's when I asked her one time." Cassie smiled at me.
"Aww, curious much?" I sank my teeth into my lip and shielded my blush from her with my hand.
"Well, I was worried then because I didn't hear from you for days." I explained.
"I know. But, yes, she did remarry. My stepdad still lives there, but he doesn't know about my past or my moms past. I don't have that much of a relationship with him. Just the occasional hello and goodbye and how are things going? I always worried about my mom after Tobias left and I just think with their past and my relationship with him, it made it really hard for me to trust someone else." I nodded my head as she talked about her stepdad.
"I can't imagine how difficult that must be for you." She shrugged her shoulders.
"Honestly, it's not as bad as what you think. I'm glad that my mom is happy and I know that Daniel makes her happy, so all I can do is just support her. She always made sacrifices for me and for Tobias and she never complained because she wanted to do what was right. I worry for her, but I worry more if she doesn't have anyone there to protect her."
She looked away as her face contorted into one of anger and pain. I lightly stroked her hand, bringing her out of her racing thoughts.
"Don't beat yourself up for what Tobias did. That was never your fault and your mom knows that." Cassie shrugged her shoulders.
"I know, but I'm no better than him. Hell, I'm in the same business as him. The same one that caused so many problems for the both of us."
"Do you think you'll ever tell her about what kind of business you do?"
