Chapter Twenty-Six

Kandra and Scora joined Briar and Alexis at the table once breakfast had been called, all four sitting quietly. Alexis knew something was wrong, there were dark circles underneath Briar's eyes she hadn't been able to get rid of before her friend had invited herself over.

"Well, it's safe to say your living quarters are far better than mine." Alexis tried to lighten the mood, Kandra chuckling softly as she cut her space waffles. Silverware scrapped against ceramic plates as Briar sat back in her seat, the cup of caf in front of her not touched.

She couldn't stop thinking of Trilla- How much she yearned to see her again, to have her cautious blue-green eyes land on her again. She missed her voice the most, how elegant the Inquisitor sounded while speaking a simple sentence.

"Scora, how'd you get that scar on your face?" Scora lifted her head, her cheeks blazing red. The scar was horizontal across the bridge of the death trooper's nose, running across both cheeks. It was deep, the skin white and weathered.

"Briar!" Alexis exclaimed in shock.

Scora raised a hand, chuckling softly. "As a Stormtrooper I went hand-to-hand with a female rebel with a hunting knife. She knocked my helmet off and cut me before I was able to pull a knife of my own." Briar raised both eyebrows in amazement, nodding softly.

"Fantastic." She remarked, catching the forgiving look Alexis shot the woman she had a crush on.

"Why'd you order food anyway? We could have made some here." Her friend remarked in irritation as Briar ran a finger over the hot surface of the cup in front of her.

Steam rose as her pad of her pointer finger heated up instantly. She was exhausted. Briar cried herself to sleep last night, hugging a pillow to her chest.

"Because it would have taken far too long to make it. I need to leave soon for the meeting." Briar's eyes shot to the door as there was a knock, Kandra rising and opening the door before the other occupants could stand. There was soft conversation, a male voice filling the living quarters as plates shuffled.

Kandra turned, the man following behind her quickly. Drax stepped out of the woman's shadow, waving at Briar with the hand not holding the datapad. "Hey, I was on my way here when I ran into the server... so I thought I'd just bring it." The plate was set down in front of briar, the cover lifted. Briar's eyes landed on the Colo Claw Fish and GoldFruit with distaste.

"That's nasty." Alexis remarked, staring down at Briar's plate. Briar imagined Trilla spooning the food into her mouth back on Cantonica, how her eyes had closed as her teeth mashed the fish eggs and yolk.

Briar dipped the spoon into the concoction, spooning the food into her mouth without smelling it. The fish eggs felt like small jellies in her mouth, her teeth mashing the substance as she fought her gag reflex. Briar would never order this again.

"Now, what did you need?" Drax asked, sitting across from Briar, right next to Kandra. Briar forced herself to take another awful bite, imagining Trilla teasing her for hating it.

"I need you to locate the Second Sister again." A sigh left Drax's lips as he placed the datapad flat onto the table. Alexis placed her hand on Briar's thigh, squeezing gently in reassurance.

Briar nodded towards the man, another sigh leaving him as he began to type on the screen. "It says she is unlocatable right now." Briar leaned over to look at the screen, confirming what Drax had stated.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she either has her tracker off or she's in an area we're having trouble getting signal to." Briar ran a hand through her hair, attempting to calm the panic rising in her chest.
