Chapter Twenty-Seven
Briar was alone. A full day had passed since her assassination attempt and she felt like the walls were moving. She was coming down from the adrenalin high you feel after escaping death- only to find out your ex had placed a mark on your back.
Mon Mothma had been quick to release a statement claiming she had no hand in the attack. The Empire didn't care, war was war. Everything was ramping up, a meeting was set for a week from now to pinpoint the bases they would attack to completely crumble the Rebellion. The Imperial Army would bare their teeth and swallow any Rebels brave enough to stand against them. They were done with the negotiations and petty attacks, this was the only way forward.
At one in the morning, as Briar sat up in bed with the covers pooled around her lap, she'd realized Trilla was gone. If the Inquisitor hadn't come to her aid after she'd almost died, she wouldn't be coming back at all. She had seen the other Inquisitors come and go through meetings, none of them speaking of the Second Sister or where she was located. It was like the raven haired Inquisitor with blue-green eyes hadn't actually existed.
"Are you there, Inferno One?" Alexis asked through the comms, stealing Briar's attention away from her own destructive thoughts. Briar was standing in the middle of her living room, the coffee table shoved up against the couch. The projector broadcasted the camera view through Alexis's helmet.
Lucius and Alexis had been forced to partake the mission alone, Briar would have compromised them the second they stepped into the Rebellion hangar. Their orders were simple: Break into the command center and procure stolen Imperial information containing special forces command lists and names of undercover personnel.
"Yes, I apologize. Please inform me when you land." Briar spoke, wiping her brain of all thoughts not pertaining to the mission. Which, was harder than it seemed, simply because the woman she loved was hiding from her somewhere in the galaxy.
She had refused to wear her restrictive uniform today, instead wearing comfortable black clothing. Her helmet had been sent out for repairs- Briar expected to have it back within a day.
What if you just went to Nur and tried to see her? A cup of caf sat behind her on the coffee table, grabbing the scalding cup by the base and not the handle. Her hand started to itch and burn, her hold tightening as another thought of Trilla passed through her. Briar's skin screamed out and throbbed as she turned her attention to the projector, watching as Alexis and Lucius landed safely.
"We're here, Inferno One." Lucius stated.
"Heard, the easiest way into the building looks to be the ducts in the floor the service droids use." Briar instructed, losing feeling in her right hand.
"Copy, Inferno One."
"Copy, Inferno One."
Briar watched as the two progressed through the hangar in a crouch, hiding behind overturned crates and supplies when a Rebel grew close to their location. She could hear Alexis's measured breathing, allowing enough air into her lungs to not cause exhaustion, but not enough to allow her breathing to escape through the distorter in the helmet.
That was a skill Briar had struggled with when she had first gone to Vardos. She was used to sucking air in freely through a ventilator, her lungs would scream when she began to withhold that sweet oxygen. The first time they had conducted that exercise, she had almost passed out.
"Alright, we're in." Alexis stated, Briar sipping her caf. She was supporting her right hand with holding the cup up, having no feeling at all in the appendage. She didn't mind though, it stopped her mind from wandering. She looked down, the skin of her right hand the color of Trilla's lightsaber. Well, not all thoughts.
