I tried to sneak out the next morning, knowing I needed a few hours to reach the cave.
"Hey, where are you going?", my friend John stopped me.
"I...wanted to train, in the forest, hiding and attacking, you know."
"Sure, thought you wanted to fight the dragon?"
"I will, but I want to be sure.", I sat on my horse.
"Or are you scared?"
"Never.", I rode towards the sun.
A few hours later, I arrived, this time I brought my horse all the way up.
"Marvel?", I carefully checked the cave to not scare him.
"Are you here?"
With a loud growl, the huge lizard jumped down in front of me, smoke coming out of his mouth.
But then with small cloud of smoke he turned back to his half human self."Sorry, didn't know it was you." , he smiled.
"It's okay. I brought you something.", I smiled back.
"For me?"
"Yeah, look.", I led him to my horse, which he petted immediately.
"I got you some food, and some cups and plates. I thought you could use something to cook."
"Oh wow, thank you very much! This is perfect!"
"Glad you like it."
"Want to eat something? I still got food left."
"Sure.", he placed the new stuff on a rock and lighted up a fire, before cutting the meat with his claws, they were as sharp as a sword, going through the flesh like it was nothing.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah, what is it?", he grilled the meat.
"Why are you still half human?"
"Good question.... I don't know honestly, I ran away while they cursed me, I started to transform when I reached the gate, the pain was strong but I didn't stop, in the forest I transformed completely. I wanted to change back, but it didn't work, I tried and tried and when I drank from the river one day I noticed my reflection looked different, maybe the curse wasn't complete.", he handed me the food.
"Or you're not as much of a monster they wanted you to believe you are.", I smiled, trying his meal.
"Maybe..... do you like it?"
"Yeah it's great, thanks."
We ate in silence, just exchanging a few looks, he was very nice and I liked him.
"Want to see my cave?", he suddenly asked after finishing his meal.
"Sure.", he grabbed my hand and pulled me in.
It wasn't that big but comfy, for a cave, he had a small fire place in the middle of it, behind the little fire was a bed made of hay covered with a small cotton sheet."That's a bit small for a dragon."
"It's okay, really."
"Sure?"
"Yeah, one last thing before you go back, can you hug me?"
"Ehm, sure.", I hugged him and again I felt how he buried his head in my neck.
Now I knew what to bring him tomorrow.
