My body felt heavy. My eyelids half open--staring into the sky. It hurt. Weightless. White light clouded my vision. Was it the sun? No. Was it an angel? No.
It was the white light of death, coming to consume me. Why was this?
Ah, right. I had been doing commissions for the adventurer's guild. I took on a harder one than I usually do, just to challenge myself. But, it turned out that that had been a grave mistake.
I was being killed by some stupid abyss mages. There were two. One cryo, one hydro. I kept being frozen in place, and it was getting harder to break out of it.
It didn't help that there was a lake right next to me too. It didn't matter if I dodged the hydro abyss mages attacks. I would just keep being forced to go into the water, and then continue to be frozen by the cryo abyss mage.
This is the last time.. I thought. This time I'll be frozen for good.
It was so early in the morning. No one is coming to save me. No one to be my hero..
"Hey you!! Get away from her!" Just then, I heard a shout. I lay on the ground motionless, still frozen, staring up into the dawn sky.
"You pesky abyss mages should know.." The voice started again. "That no one escapes my sights!" Suddenly, I heard arrows pouring from the sky. I assumed they were pyro inflicted, since I heard sizzling sounds-- that presumably came from them breaking the cryo abyss mage's bubble shield.
The abyss mages shrieked and I assume teleported away. "Ugh, that's cheating!" Said the mysterious voice. "Scaredy-cats.."
Then, the voice's attention turned on me. "Oh my goodness! I need to get you to Barbara stat!" I heard them gasp. I then felt someone pick me up, and carry me in their arms. "Alright. Just a warning, this might be a bumpy ride, but you need healing ASAP!" The voice said. I wanted to say that it was okay, but I was still frozen and even if I wasn't, I didn't have the energy to speak anyway.
✨time skip brought to you by Amber's cute headband✨
When I woke up, there was another bright light. Although this time, it was a comforting one instead of the sharp, cold one of death. "Ah, you're awake! Thank Barbatos, hehe!" Said a giggly voice. This time it was different though-- and it sounded familier.
"Hm..?" I hummed as my eyes fluttered open. I was still half-asleep though, and was only faintly aware of my surroundings yet.
"Are you feeling any better?" The second voice spoke again.
"Mm." I made a sound of approval and nodding slightly. I slowly sat up in the comfy bed I was laying in.
"Great! That's good to hear." I heard hands clapping together enthusiastically.
I turned my head to my left, to see a smiley, light-blonde haired girl with bouncy pigtails and blue eyes that shone just as much as her bubbly personality did.
"Barbara..?" I said quietly, squinting my eyes.
"Hehe, I'm glad you remember me." She continued to smile at me.
"Did you save me?" I asked in a tired, worn out voice.
"Oh, no! Amber is the one who saved you! She's been waiting outside this room all worried about you. You're in the church of Monstadt right now." Barbara explained.
"Ah, okay." I replied.
"Amber brought you here after she saw you in really bad shape from fighting some abyss mages!" She continued. "I'll go tell her that you're alright, so she'll be at ease."
After that, the bubbly girl Barbara left the room, and hummed her famous tune as she walked away.
I wonder who this Amber girl is.. I feel like I've heard her name before, but I can't recall how or why. I wondered as I layed back down and stared up at the church's ceiling high above me.
I heard the door open again, and this time there was a brunette girl with a cute headband. She rushed toward me like a bullet. Man, she's one fast runner. I thought.
"Hey! I'm so glad you're alright. How do you feel? Better?" She asked.
"Yeah.. a lot better thanks to you and Barbara." I smiled at her. I continued, "I'm not sure what would've happened if you hadn't came along and saved me.." Actually I did know. I would've died. But if I did say that it'd ruin the atmosphere, so I held back on that thought.
"Oh, it was nothing! I'm an outrider from the Knights of Favonius! I was just doing my job, heheh." Amber said.
So that's where I've heard her name. I've heard the people of Monstadt talking about her sometimes about how nice and brave she is and stuff. I thought.
"Hey, I was wondering.. why were you there in the first place? I was kinda far from Monstadt." I questioned her.
"Ah, well. Grandmaster Jean told be that the hilichurl camps have been reported closer to Monstadt recently, so I've been scouting farther out to where most of them are to take them out!" Amber said enthusiastically.
"I see. That explains it then.. Hey I'm not complaining though, you saved my life!" I told her.
"Aww, it wasn't that amazing of a feat.." Amber put her hand on the back on her head and looked away, embarrassingly.
"Haha, no way. You sounded really cool when you scared away those abyss mages!" I said back. I sat up again and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Come closer." I made a motion with my hand to Amber. She walked forward, and I reached my hands to the side of her face as she leaned down.
"You're literally my hero.." I whispered to the other girl as we looked into each other's eyes. Then, I leaned in more to peck a quick, small kiss on her forehead.
Amber was immediately flustered, and her face went the same color as her fiery red outfit.
"That's my present to you-- and a thank you-- for saving me back there."
"O-oh! Ummmm.. thank you!" Amber stuttered out awkwardly as she held the sides of her burning face.
Then, I got up and began to put on my shoes on.
"Wait! You should um.. probably rest more-!" Amber persuaded.
"Don't worry, I'm fine. I can rest more at home anyways. Plus, my family is probably more than worried about me, heheh." I replied calmly.
"Okay! Well uh... let me treat you Good Hunter sometime!" Amber slightly shouted at me as I hurriedly walked out of the room.
"Alright. Here's my house number if you ever wanna come by, my fiery hero~!" I smoothly reached into my pocket and threw back a small piece of paper with my address on it that I conveniently kept on me at all times.
I heard Amber make a surprised sound and jump up a little to reach the flying slip of paper.
I turned my head back just so I could see her face one last time before I left. She had a surprised look on her face as she stared down at the paper. Her eyes were gleaming and shined like the glowing stars on a lovely night. Her face had regained some of the blush from before, but she had calmed down slightly.
Cha cha real smooth. I thought as I turned my head back forward and smirked to myself.
"See ya, love." I said quietly as I opened the door to exit the room.
