Not that it was far nor that the traffic was heavy, but the tension in the back of the limousine was... at its peak.

Only Charlie seemed to realize it, though. Steve was on his phone the entire ride, typing emails and giving phone calls.

Someone opened the door for her. Setting one heel on the ground, Charlie took the hand that was extended to her and this time, she didn't back away at the sight of him. James had put on a bow tie, and the most handsome tux she ever saw him wearing.

But neither her eyes lingered on him nor her hand in his.

It felt good though, to have him close.

She have kept her distance from him once more for the past week and she kind of... missed him?

No, no way.

Charlie quickly looked away, adjusting her champagne bustier dress as he gestured for her to lead the way to the red carpet and the bunch of photographers that awaited her.

Charlie turned her head to see Steve, slipping his phone in his pocket and buttoning his tux jacket as he went round the car to join her.

"Ready?" her boyfriend said as her put a light hand on the small of her back.

"I'm not going anywhere, okay?" James said, not giving Charlie the chance to answer to Steve.

She nodded at James, her heart squeezing, and offered him a tight smile. Only then she took a deep breath, her shoulders rising and falling.

When they walked forward, camera flashes immediately blinded her. Photographers and interviewers calling her name, she smiled until her cheeks ached.

They were halfway through when an engine roared in the distance until the noise grew louder and louder. Charlie's head snapped back to where her black limo had been a a couple of minutes ago. Someone got out from the Audi R8 that had been parked at the beginning of the red carpet and threw the key to the first valet in sight.

The man casually took off his sunglasses - even though the sun had set hours ago, waving at the cheering crowd.

"Hey, Tony, remember me?"

"Sure don't," he said to the blond when he walked past her and it made Charlie laugh.

The first genuine smile of the day.

She was used to women hitting on his dad, even in front of her, but she couldn't remember the last time she saw him with someone. He earned the reputation to be quite a playboy back in California but he settled down when he met Charlie's mother, Amanda, an Hollywood actress in vogue in the mid 90s.
