I took in a strangled breath as I attempted to free myself from the metal restraints that held me down on a cold table. I was in a lab, of course, and I was being prepared for the Maze Trials. They had only been going on for a year now and my mother, Chancellor Paige, had decided to send me in as an unknown variable. I knew that this was a very VERY bad idea due to the fact that a) I was a girl and b) I was different genetically. I had the power to morph into animals of all kinds, even the ones that had gone extinct from the area after the Flare came along. My mother called my gift a curse, a genetic defect of sorts. As much as I loved her right now, I hated her twice as much. How could she even THINK about sending me, her only daughter and child, into a maze filled with Grievers? I watched on a nearby screen and saw my old friends Thomas and Teresa were watching me. A man in a lab coat then came up to me and said, "Before we place you into the trials, you must tattooed and given a few more alterations to your gift." I clenched my jaw, that meant that they were going to place a needle into my arm and give me samples of DNA from animals so that my body knows how to morph into them. Being the kind and caring person that I am, I responded with, "Why am I going into the Maze?"
"Your mother has requested that you be put into the Maze as an unknown variable." That was the same answer I would get from him when I asked the question. It had to be scripted. As he placed the needle into my arm, I saw Teresa turn away from the screen and start to cry. I wanted to reach out to her and Thomas and tell them that I would be fine. But, I couldn't with the needle being stuck into me and all. When the man pulled the needle away from me and got started on my tattoo, I was already passed out.
