"Come on!" Sam held Brooklyn's hand as they walked into a small cafe where they liked to eat occasionally on Sunday afternoons.
"Sam! What do you have to tell me?" Brooklyn sat down at the outdoor patio table.
"Remember, we eat first, then we talk." Sam opened the menu and held in front of his face to hide his grin.
"Right. I remember the first lunch you took me to when I flipped you off and stormed out." Brooklyn sighed, staring at a young couple with a baby.
"Brooklyn? Brook!" Sam waved a hand in front of her face. "Do you want the regular meal we get?"
"Um, yes." Brooklyn brushed her hair out of her face and took a sip of her drink, with things other than lunch on her mind.

"Now you'll tell me?" Brooklyn walked hand in hand with Sam into the small park. "I sound like a persistent little kid." Sam smiled at her.
"No, you don't." Sam led her over to a bench and they sat for a few minutes, their arms and legs touching. Brooklyn shivered in the cool autumn air.
"Your freezing Brooklyn." Sam took off his jacket and handed it over to Brooklyn.
"You shouldn't baby me. I'm not going to melt." Brooklyn smirked and took hold of both of Sam's hands.
"Sorry." Sam looked to the ground. He walked over to the boardwalk and stared at the lake. Brooklyn followed putting her arm around him.
"Hey. What's going on?" Brooklyn looked up at Sam, concerned.
"I got a promotion at work." Sam put on a weak smile.
"But Sammy that's great! What happened?" Brooklyn leaned into Sam's chest.
"I saw the way you were looking at that couple with the baby today. We can try again if having a baby means that much to you." Sam kissed the top of Brooklyn's head.
"No, Sam it's fine, I just..." Brooklyn trailed off, staring at a group of baby ducklings on the lake.
"See? You’re doing it again. Come on Brooklyn, let's go home." Sam started to turn but Brooklyn caught his arm. Brooklyn grabbed the collar of his shirt and kissed him slowly.
"I love you, Sam Fields. Don't ever forget."

Brooklyn slipped off the covers quietly and went to the bathroom and found the small pink box. Maybe third time's the charm in this case. They had tried and tried and nothing had worked. All the fertility calendars in the world couldn’t help their situation.
"Brooklyn?" Sam groggily said, stumbling over to the bathroom door. Brooklyn sat on the edge of the tub with the pregnancy test in her hand. "What is it?" Sam came over and sat with her, rubbing her back.
"Sam, I'm pregnant." Brooklyn burst into tears.
"What? But that's great!" Sam wiped away some tears that slipped down her cheeks. Brooklyn clung onto Sam's neck and sobbed.
"I don't know if I can do it." Sam stroked her hair and pulled her onto his lap.
"Brooklyn, you’re going to be a great mother, I promise."
"Are you sure?" Brooklyn sighed into Sam's shoulder.
"I'm sure." Sam carried Brooklyn back to bed and held her hand until she fell asleep once again in his arms.
Flashback 9 months earlier
"Come on it's a surprise!" Sam tugged at her hand as they stumbled through the trees.
"Oh my God. It's beautiful!" Brooklyn looked at the crystal blue lake and smiled at Sam.
"I used to come here as a kid all the time when Henri and Luke used to get on my nerves. It's really great for swimming too." Sam put the emphasis on swimming, and then took off his shirt.
"Uh, Sam. You wouldn't do that, would you?" Brooklyn was cut short when Sam picked her up and threw her in the water. Sam dived in after her and pulled her ankle. Brooklyn squealed and tackled Sam and sat on his shoulders. Suddenly Sam looked deep in thought.
"Brooklyn will you marry me? Sorry I can't get down on one knee, you’re kind of on my shoulders." Sam blushed and looked up at Brooklyn.
"Oh, Sam! Of course I will!" She twisted off of Sam's shoulders and wrapped her legs around his torso and kissed him.
"Shit... Brooklyn, I just dropped the ring." Sam dove to the bottom of the lake and looked for the ring. Brooklyn covered her mouth with her hand and tried not to laugh.
"Typical Sam, eh?" She said as he came up for air, holding the ring covered in weeds and sand.
