Athena POV:
Today is the day we separate. Wade and I pack our bags together, making sure everything we need is packed. Oakley and Felix do the same. They are sticking together too. I tell myself that I won't miss Oakley, but I know I will. Once we have everything packed and the place where we spent so much of our time looks like we were never there, we say our goodbyes.
"I'm gonna miss you," Oakley whines.
"Me too," I reply. Wade and Felix are saying their goodbyes too. I shake Felix's hand as a goodbye.
"Good luck, Athena,'' he smiles.
"You too," I nod. Wade And I start out going into the forest as we have so many times before. We enter in the same place as usual. The forest is cold and rather damp today. I can sense a storm coming on. We find a small cave by a tree to set up camp in. We eat the packed fruit and meat as we watch the Anthem play. The only tributes left are me, Wade, Oakley, Felix, Hudson, and two other boys. About a minute after the Anthem ends, the rain starts. Light at first but it gets stronger and stronger. Showering the ground in clear rain drops. It starts torrential downpouring and leaking in through the corners of our cave. Wade and I have to share a sleeping bag as the other one is being stuffed in a large crack in the top. It's cold out but I feel rather warm. Then, the thunder begins. The first crack makes me jump.
"Aw, are you scared of the lighting?" He teases, pulling me closer to him.
"Um, no! I'm just... cold." I scoot away from him and roll my eyes.
"Ok then.." I can hear his smirk.

I wake the next morning cuddled up to Wade. His hand is gripping my waist tight. I blush and try to scoot away from him. He groans and pulls me closer.
"Ugh, Wade!" I whisper-shout. He slowly starts waking up. I crawl out of the sleeping bag and pull my shoes back on. I split our servings in half and eat mine. Wade wakes next and I give him his food. We pack our stuff up and crawl out of the cave. The morning air is cold and the ground is still wet. We ran out of meat last night so we decide to split up and look for food. And potential tributes. I go back the way we came and Wade goes the other way. The sun is bright and the dew sparkles causing an almost perfectly peaceful morning. It brings back memories of morning walks with my mother when I was young. After 30 minutes of walking, I come across a noise. But it doesn't belong to an animal... I drop my bag and break into a sprint towards the voice.
"I'M COMING!" I scream into the forest. You can hear the pure panic in my voice as I charge through the thick foliage. As I break through the tree line I spot the commotion. Oakley is laying on the ground in a pool of her own blood. Felix is fighting a boy and.. Hudson? I run over to Oakley and kneel beside her.
"Oakley! Oakley, it's me!" I cry.
"Athena." She sounds relieved.
"Shh, Shh. It's ok! I promise, you're going to be ok!"
"Is he dead?" She asks.
"Hudson? Yeah, yeah he's dead!"
"Oh."
"Just hold on a little longer! Please, you're going to be fine," I plead. "FELIX!"
"Shit." Felix's voice sounds from behind us. "Hey, you're ok, right? She's gonna be ok? Right?" Felix asks me, his voice threatening to break.
"I- it's hard to tell." I stutter. I want to believe that she will be fine, but I really don't know.
"You have to make sure she's ok! It's a knife wound! You know how to deal with those!" Felix sounds angry now.
"I know basic knife wounds! I've never been stabbed before!" I retaliate ageryly.
"Guys." Oakley whines. "There's nothing you can do."
"No, there has to be something!" Felix begs her. She shakes her head.
"Hey, stay with me." Felix looks down at her.
"Don't leave us, please." I feel the sting of tears. Just then, a voice chuckles from behind. I leap up and sprint at top speed towards the boy. I see Hudson's lifeless form on the ground and realise that Felix must have killed him. The boy is fast, but I'm faster. I catch him and tackle him to the ground, pinning him under my legs. We're at the end of the forest now. I press my arm to his neck, cutting off his air supply. I grab my knife and stab it into his gut, unfortunately missing any vital organs, as he was able to push me off and jump up. I throw the knife at his head but he ducks. The knife knicks his ear.
"Ughh!" I scream, frustrated he puts up such a good fight. I grab another knife to throw but just as I lift it a figure runs from the under bush and pins the boy to a tree. I stumble back, exhausted. My head spins and I can barely see. I rub my eyes to help clear my vision. The two boys are fighting on the ground. I want to help, but my legs feel so very shaky. I collapse to the ground. My sight blurs. A scream wakes me from my state and I whip my head around to see Felix laying on the ground, blood pooling from his chest. The boy wears a wicked grin. I stumble to my feet. I'm so tired. A sharp stab on pain shots through my leg. I look down to see the knife in my leg.
"Ahgg!!" I scream. I messily pull another knife from my pocket and throw it in his direction. The boy screams in pain and I know I hit him. I run towards what I can make out to be him. He pulls his knife up and slices my forehead. The pain is so sharp and sudden I stumble back and fall. The blood runs into my eyes and I can't see anything. I wait, knowing I'm not going to leave this arena, but the fatal hit never comes. I wipe the blood from my eyes and look up to see the boy fighting someone else. At first, I thought that Felix might be ok, and he didn't die, but his hair is darker and he is taller. Wade. I smile as the blood pools back down my eyes, blinding me again. I feel my breath hitch and it's getting harder and harder to breathe. I lay back my head and close my blood covered eyes. A thought seeps into my mind. My family. How disappointing I am to them. Killed so easily. I wish I could fight for longer. If only I could. I can. I believe it. In another time. In another world. Maybe. I hope Wade can beat him. He deserves it. His family would be so proud. He would bring pride to our District. That's all I wanted to do. All I know is that I will see Wade again. In another world. Him and I. We'll meet again. Above the stars.
