Chap 7

I was in bed trying to sleep. The clock beside my bed time was flashing 3:00 Am. Each time I tried to close my eyes and image of Tobias lying on the floor was invading my mind.

I was finally going to pick up a book and try to fall asleep, when I heard a knock outside my door. I get up and unlock my door. Yes, I lock my door, it's a habit.
I open and was greeted by Caleb. His eyes were half open and he was carrying a pillow tucked under his shoulder.

"Hey" he says. His voice was thick.

"Hey you good?" I say with a concerned sister voice I use in case on emergencies. Sibling stuff.

Caleb had dark circles under his eyes and his lip was bitten raw.
"I can't sleep, I was wondering if we could sleep together" he says.

I knew something was wrong. The last time I ever slept with Caleb was when we were both six years old and we were both scared of the thunder when a storm blew up. But he looked almost on the verge of tears so I decided not to question his actions, yet. I open the door slightly more and he gets in and flops on my bed.

I lay down next to him and his chest relaxes. He grabs my hand to his chest and doesn't let go. After his breaths steadied I slowly let my hand go. His eyes were closed and he was sleeping.

I turn the other way and close my eyes too. This time I dream of Caleb and Tobias both sitting in a dark room without an escape.

____

"You can't possibly be serious!"

"I am. They are staying together even if I had to handcuff them together"

"That kid is a crack head. Poor Marcus had to deal with police and neighbours. He had no responsibly"

Caleb stirs in his sleep and open his eyes. He sits up and looks at me curiously.
"Why are you sitting of the floor?"

I put my ear to the door and realize that mom and dad are whispering now.
I shrug at Caleb.
"I heard them talking. Mom wants me to marry Tobias and dad thinks he's a crack head"

Caleb just chuckles.
"Well thanks for sleeping with me"

I sit up and go next to him. His hair was messy and he sat there rubbing his eyes.
"What was that about anyways?"

He looks at me and then shakes his head. His eyes flicker to my door and then to his hands.
"Uh-it was nothing. Seriously Tris you can just forget about it"

I press my lips in a line.
"Okay well I'm going to eat. Go get ready for school"

He nods and I take my backpack before closing the door behind me. I quietly walk over to Caleb's room. I almost never enter it. It had a sky blue wall paper and he had a giant water bed. His books were put neatly in bookshelves that were located on either side of the bed.

I look in the closet but all I find are dirty socks and underwear. I open the drawers beside his bedside and shuffle through the the pens and pencils.
I get on my knees and look under his bed. To my surprise, there was a little brief case tucked in the corner. My hand stretches until I finally grab the handle and pull it to me.

It was a black leather suit case that I never saw Caleb carry. It wasn't covered in dust and it didn't even look old. I flicker my eyes to the doorway but Caleb wasn't there. Taking my chances, I open the suitcase.

My eyes widen and I look at the contents. Tubes. Each one of them had a tiny labelling.
Crack.
Pills.
Weed.

Labels after label makes my heart sink. I drop the tubes back in the bag and stare at a picture of Caleb. It was when he was about five and it was hanged on the wall in front of me. He had his hands widely spread and he was smiling with his teeth. He looks so innocent.

I couldn't believe it. The money that was stuffed in the bag was thousands. In the pocket of the bag was a paper. I open it and realize they were all names.
Zeke.
Eric.
Lauren.
Sabrina.
Chad.

I skip through the names. I was afraid of finding his name on the list. As I go lower I find it printed in bold.
Tobias.

Holy shit.

I clench my fists in anger. I felt betrayed, by my own brother. He was going against the law, and he was selfish. I bet he didn't even think about our safety. My door clicks open from across the hall and I quickly push the bag under the bed. I get up and walk out to see Caleb in front of me.
"Tris what were you doing in my room?" He asks.

His hair was swept back and he was wearing a green blouse. He looks normal, and if I didn't just see that, I would have never suspected anything.
How long has he been hiding this for?

"Nothing" I say. I tried my best to keep the anger out of my voice.

"Well I was just going to check something-" he walks toward his room and I grab his wrists.

"Don't bother. I checked, it's under the bed"

His eyes widen and his body turned rigid.
"Tris let me explain" he pleads.

I let go of his wrists harshly and push him. His head hits the door and he groans in pain.
"Tris if you let me explain"

"Asshole" I say coldly.
I Walk downstairs and go out the front door.

"Tris where are you going? Come back and eat breakfast" my mom's voice rings and I shake my head before closing the door.

I head outside and stuff my fists in my coat pockets. I knew I would be late for school but I didn't care. I walk to Tobias's house and ring the doorbell.
