Shuichi sat at the table and watched the single carnation on the desk. It was so bright and happy in his dull room. A delicate flower blooms from a long stem originating from the base of the vase, and it seemed to stretch out like tiny rays of sunshine. The flower was alone in the glass, the end cut cleanly as it settles into the water he had poured into it earlier that evening

When Kokichi gave it to him, he felt both happy and relieved. After confessing the day before, the boy had been distracted by someone before he could get a response. Shuichi could still recall the nervousness as he approached Kokichi's desk and the way his every step felt heavier than before. He isn't the type to open himself up this much, but he couldn't help the way his heart skipped a beat every time he saw the supreme leader's genuine smile or when he got a little closer than usual.

So when he received the carnation from him the next day, he felt his whole world freeze around him. It was so clearly fresh and bright that a single look at the soft petals made it easy to tell it was important. And again, before Shuichi could respond, Kokichi was distracted once more. It was endearing to him how short of an attention span he had. He doesn't think he would've been able to formulate a proper response at the time anyways.

Now here he was, in his dorm feeling somewhat content, but he was still curious. He pulled out his phone and as his fingers dragged across his screen, he began to feel nervous. What if it was just some cruel joke and they actually meant something terrible?

Instead, a big batch of carnations popped up on his screen and next to it read:
"Carnations are meant to signify pure love and innocence."

Relief is too light a word to describe the emotion that flooded his body as he read the results. Not even Kokichi was that sick a person, right? Suddenly, a quiet, yet familiar knock echoed in his room. Shuichi shut off his phone and made his way to the door where Kaito and Maki stood at the other side.

"Hey, sidekick number one!" Kaito beamed, "Ready to get our workout on? Today I'm feeling two hundred push-ups in me." A look of wistfulness took his face as opposed to the observant one of Maki's right next to him. Shuichi just laughed at Kaito's antics and made his way to exit his room before Maki interrupted.

"What is that?" was all she said, and when he followed her eyes, they were fixated on the flower sitting on his desk. Her expression was indifferent, but her eyes had an look of expectancy as she eyed him.

Kaito raised his eyebrow before peeking behind Shuichi, his eyes landing on the little vase as well, and they widened a little as he saw it. A look of uncertainty was there for a split second before he turned to the assassin next to him, who was still waiting for a response from the detective.

He felt his face heat up a little and turned away. "Ah that...that was a gift from someone, it's not important," he mumbled.

Maki looked at him a little more weirdly than before with an emotion he couldn't quite describe, "Well, who gave it to yo–" She was interrupted by Kaito's booming laughter as he slung his arm around Shuichi's shoulder.

"That doesn't matter, Maki-roll! If he doesn't want to tell us, he doesn't have to. Now let's go, these push-ups aren't gonna do themselves!" and with that, he dragged both Maki and Shuichi quickly, though Maki was quick to break from his grasp with a look of embarrassment on her face. They made their way to the courtyard, practically forgetting the events that had previously occurred and getting into the usual banter.
