Chapter 18: It's Finally Happening

Y/n's POV

As Gale clutched his head in his hands I was on the other side of the wall trying to comfort him. He was yelling trying to make the sounds of the screams go away, and it hurt to see him that way. A bit later the hour was up and the invisible wall vanished. I ran over to Gale and took his head in my hands telling him that it was okay and that it's over now. It took a while to calm him down and get him to take his hands off his ears, but eventually, he did.

"It's okay, Gale. It's over now" I said, still holding his head. He buried his head into my neck and I held him like that for a while, saying things like "It's okay, Gale" or "It's over now" Or "Posy's safe, don't worry"

Finnick also calmed down a bit, and we all decided to refresh and hydrate for a bit then go to the tree. Johanna came and sat next to me, we were both silent for a bit until Johanna decided to say something.

"Who's Posy?"  She asked

"Gale's little sister. She's only 5" I answered and she nodded. "Who's Annie?"

"Girl victor from District 4, she and Finnick are madly in love" I nodded. "hey, I'm sorry for...you know...threatening to kill you"

"Eh, it's fine. No hard feelings. I've been through worse" We both slightly laughed. A little bit later we all decided to get going again. Gale and I took the back, and Finnick and Johanna took the front with Beetee in the middle.

"You okay?" I asked Gale, he looked really lost in thought

"What? Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Just a little bit rattled. It sounded exactly like Posy," Gale said

"I know, but it was fake, the Capital can literally do anything. It was just a mutt" Gale grabbed my hand as we walked and I gladly held his.

We made it to the tree without running into any other tributes.

"Okay, here we are," Beetee said. Beetee, Johanna, and I wrapped the tree while Finnick and Gale took watch to make sure that nobody was gonna sneak up on us. We wrapped the tree and almost the whole thing was covered, we still have a few hundred yards of wire to bring it down to the beach though. After a few hours of wrapping and taking turns taking watch, the tree was wrapped well enough and midnight is in 1 hour.

"Okay, Johanna, Y/n, you guys go bring the coil and drop it in the water, but as soon as it's in the water, get as far away from the beach, got it?" Beetee said

"Yup," Johanna and I said

"Wait, I think I should go with Y/n," Gale said

"No, I need you and Finnick here to protect me. Remember, you guys need to keep me alive until midnight?" Beetee said

"It's okay, Gale, I'll be fine," I said

"Are you sure?"

"Positive" I gave him a kiss and Johanna grabbed the coil.

"Okay, let's get going," Johanna said. We started for the beach. We took turns unraveling the coil and keeping watch. We've been walking for about 25 minutes and we're almost to the beach. I'm the one that's pulling the coil right now. I feel it get stuck.

"C'mon," Johanna said

"I'm trying...it's stuck," I say and try to pull some more, but then somebody cut the wire.

"Get down!" Johanna whispered/yelled. I ducked and Johanna pushed me to the ground, she was about to slash my arm but I pushed her out of the way.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I yelled and threw a punch.
