Your P.O.VBean juice, bean juice, bean juice,.... BEAN JUICE!!! I sang happily in my head as I turned down the hall and into the break room for yet another cup of coffee. I was on my third double shift from the afternoon leading into overnight this week in the good old Arkham Asylum and I needed all the help I could get and in this case it's in the form of ... BEAN JUICE!! The only down fall is that the lack of sleep and the over amount of coffee has made me a little silly. But luckily I just look sluggish on the outside and feel like I'm buzzing on the inside. No one knows what I'm thinking thank god or they would think I'm childish and unprofessional, but at the same time I'm saving everyone's ass by coming into work and doing overtime so we don't fall behind. So they can all suck it and fight me! Ok I need to stop and calm myself and ... where the hell is the damn milk?! I thought annoyed as I had my hand on the open fridge door scanning the shelf's for the carton of milk.
I could have sworn there was half a carton left. I retched in with my free hand to move the small amount of objects in the fridge to see if the milk is hiding. There wasn't much for the milk to hide behind in here. Just a few lunch boxes, a take out box and Powerade with a note on both saying do not touch and ewww, a ceraned covered sandwich covered in mold. Gross; oh well not my job not my problem! I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole.
"So do you live here now?" A male voice spoke causing me to look up. Jim Gordon stood leaning in the doorway of the break room. "Oh yeah didn't you see I got a nice little spot on the bottom shelf in the storage closet. It's so homey! The smell of cleaning chemicals and the soft toilet paper makes for a great bed!" I said with a genuine smile. Man I hope he knows I'm joking because that could also sound like sarcasm. He just laughed and shook his head. Oh ok good he knows I'm joking. He walked into the break room and towards the counter where the coffee machine and other mundane stuff neatly stood while I turned my attention back to the fridge hoping I would magically see the milk appear. "What are you looking for?" Asked Jim. "The milk." I replied starting to look in the door shelves hoping to see at least one small milk packet mixed in with the sauces and dressings left here. "Oh I think I saw Martin eating some cereal earlier." He stated pointing his finger out the door. I paused for a moment and straighten up to look at him. "Are you kidding me?" I said with a not so enthusiastic face. "Sorry no." "Shit! Why can't he bring his own stuff?...oh well I guess as long as there is coffee I shouldn't be complaining." I stated lazily closing the fridge door and walk towards Jim. I stopped right beside him and started getting my coffee cup ready before pouring. God I wish there what milk in this! Oh well hello sugar here I come! "Do you want one?" I asked him as I finished filling up my cup. "Yeah that sounds great." He smiled warmly pushing off from his leaning position on the counter and turned towards me as I finished pouring him his coffee.
"I don't know how good it's going to be, without milk."I hand it to him. "That's ok I drink it black." He admitted taking a large gulp. "You are a nuisance to society." I exclaim jokingly but also slightly disgusted before taking a sip of mine. This is so gross but I need it. Once those words leave my mouth he smiles and slightly chuckles before swallowing his coffee. "But it's so good this way. You should try it." He smiles. "No thanks. This is as close as I ever want to get." I state referring to my so called excuse for coffee. Man I'm going to let Martin have a piece of my mind! "So why are you still here? Didn't I see you serving lunch?" He asked leaning up against the counter beside me, causing me to do the same. "Take a wild guess." "Did Stella call in again?" "Yep! Good old Stella she is a year and a half from retiring and she just says fuck it. I wish I could do that." "So what's your position here then Y/n?" "Yeah. It's Dietary, Housekeeping, and Laundry. The best of it all. I don't mind it though I get all the hours I could ever want so I can't complain." "You're going to burn yourself out if you keep this up." "Awe, is Thee James Gordon concerned about little old me." I say in a playful sweet way, putting my hand on my chest while trying to act like a southern bell. He looks down and smiles while shaking his head before taking another drink. "Just saying." He states.
I smile and huff slightly knowing he is right. "What about you? Last I saw you were strictly on day shifts?" I ask back before taking a sip and trying to swallow it quick. "Yeah well Mr. Lang had other ideas." "In other words you're on Garry's shit list. Jim, Jim, Jim that's not a good place to be. It's almost impossible to get off it. What did you even do to dig yourself that deep?" "You don't want to know." He says taking another big gulp of coffee. "Wow you really are a nuisance to society! I better steer clear!" I exclaim joking again putting my hands up smiling. "You? What about me? I should be steering clean of you! Your the one doing doubles and practically live here! You might get so tired you start to lose your mind, or hell maybe you've been an inmate all along." He teases. "Oh No you found out my secret! You'll never catch me alive!" I exclaim dramatically then move my arms quickly to make it look like I'm running on the spot.
Jim and I both giggle a bit, and that's when I notice that this is really the first time I actually got a chance to talk to him. I'm always so shy normally but tonight it's different. I think it has to do with me being tired but it's nice just to be myself around people and to start off with Jim Gordon is on a whole nother level! I mean he is very attentive there is no denying that! And to say that I haven't checked him out before is an understatement but talking to him and joking around and even getting him to laugh is blowing my mind right now! "So is this what you want to do for the rest of your life then?" He asked, looking into my eyes again. My god his eyes are beautiful! And I can't believe I'm even holding eye contact right now I usually can't! And we are so close, have we always been this close? "Umm no not really. This job is great but I want to be a secretary for the commissioner some day." I admit slightly shyly as I start to get a little nervous. "Wow really?! That's great! I don't hear that a lot, but that's great!" He smiles even more. "Yeah I almost have all of my qualifications. What about you?" "Well I want to be a detective again but other than that I'm happy with that, for now." He starts explaining nonshalontly then finishes with leaning in slightly and giving me a smile.
"Yeah but you'll have to get off Garry's shit list first. Have fun with that." I joke again. "Yeah I know. I don't know how but I will... You know this is really nice, talking to you I mean. I never thought you would be this outgoing. You always seem so shy and preserved. Both aren't a bad thing but, this is really nice." He states, that beautiful smile never leaving his face. "Yeah it is. It's probably because I'm tired though. In all honesty I don't know how I got this far into conversation without saying something awkward." I explain looking down at my coffee. "Your not awkward on a good day, trust me! And I didn't expect you to be this funny!" He chuckled, making me feel a little better. "Thanks! I try." I smile up at him then take a large gulp of my disgusting coffee. "This coffee is terrible!" I state making a sour face trying to get as much down as I can. "Yeah I know. Hey if your not working tomorrow maybe we can go grab something that could actually pass for decent coffee? I know this cute little diner that has one of the best coffees in the city, and they even have a whole bunch of different pies there too! What do you say?" He asked, looking at me with a hopeful smile. I smiled back. "You know I still stand by my a nuisance to society statement, because coffee and pie at the same time?!" I paused and giggled a bit, earning a chuckle from him followed by a slight blush on his checks before I continued . "But yeah that sounds great!"
