You guys know this? This is termed as "thayathu" ..everyone think thats a pendent kind of thing attached to a black or red string tied around neck or waist.
People believe that it saves from buri nazar or something like that.
But whats the reason behind it?
Well this is very interesting .. In olden days we dont have doctors..we have special persons who dont have any degree or any education..but these do deliveries for pregnant ladies..they knew ayurveda.. they know how to use the leaves as medicines..This person who doesnt own any degree does deliveries right.. What they do is..when a baby is born..the blood that oozes from umbilical cord is collected into a container and a special ingredient is added to it..this mixture is stored in this so called "thayatthu"..actually the pendent kind of thing u see in the image is a container that has opening..this mixture is put in this container and closed carefully..this pendent is supposed to be carried by that baby lifelong by woring it with string (red or blqck)..now why do they do this? . . . Because the blood collected from umbilical cord has some medicinal properties..it is also said that it has stem cells which can cure cancer too..In future if that person faces any medical issue that pendent is opened and the mixture is mixed with milk or water and have it..this cures their medicial condition..this use to happen in olden days..
Now the purpose is not known..people think there is some power in that pendent..so they buy it and made them wear to their babies.. . . . It is also said that . . . Instead of blood..few days later when baby's umbilical cord shreds from them it is dried in sun and fine powder is made from it...this is stored in container thayathu and carried it as a pendent like thayathu.. . . . Now a days you would have heard about or have seen some boards in hospitals.."store stem cells" or cord blood banking..This is the same thing..they are asking us to store the umbilical cord or blood from it..they usually store it in freezer under certain conditions...but this practice was already performed by our ancient people..in few south parts of india..this practice ia still in progress under tradition ..isnt this a wonder? . .
