Chapter 9: skip

You woke up feeling slightly better than yesterday, except Billy was no where to be seen. After your kiss last night, that was the only thing you could think of. You got up to go to the dining room to make some coffee. Then you saw Billy sitting in a chair. He had a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Morning Sunshine." He said with a smile.
"Oh- I made some coffee. Hope you didn't mind." He added.
"No not at all." You said with a smile and went to pour yourself a mug.

You looked at the clock and realized you only had an hour before school started, that wasn't enough time considering you also had to take a shower.
"Fuck." You muttered under your breath.
"What?" He asked.
"School, I don't have time to take a shower." You responded.
"Let's skip." He said and sipped his drink.
"What?"
"Let's skip, take a day off man, fuck those assholes at school." He said and smiled.
"What are we going to do?"
"Anything." He responded. You didn't really know what you were going to do that day maybe go out and get lunch.
"Alright, I'll call Steve and tell him to not worry about picking me up." You said with a smile and rushed to the phone.

"Ok, hope you feel better." Steve said after you had told him you wouldn't be going to school.
"Bye Steve!" You said and after a second you hung up.

"I'm going to take a shower." You said to Billy, who was still sitting at the table staring at some pictures on the wall. You made your way over to him.
"That's my mom." You said in a monotone voice as you pointed to a woman on the photo.
"Is she still around?" He asked trying not to make the question weird.
"Nah, she is off with some other guy in Arizona." You said.
"Ah." He said.
"Well- I'll be back I'm going to take a shower." You said and ran up the stairs.

When you finished your shower you started to get dressed. You still were thinking about your kiss with Billy. Did he like you like that? Probably not. He's got 100 different girls fawning over him, why you? Probably just another guy, it won't matter in like a week.

After you finished getting dressed you walked downstairs and Billy was still looking at photos, these were more recent ones though. He was smiling at a photo of you at the beach.
"What?" You asked while laughing a bit.
"You just look so happy, that's all." He said still smiling. You looked at the photo and smiled as well.

"You ready to go?" He asked, breaking the silence.
"Mhm." You replied. Still unsure as to where your going.
"So should we get lunch or something?" You asked.
"Sure." He said with a grin. You both made your way out of the house and into his car. You dad still wasn't home which was lucky. You sat in silence for a bit until he spoke up.

"So where are you from originally?" He asked.
"Arizona, why?"
"Just wondering, because you said your mom was in Arizona." He added.
"Shit! Sorry if that was insensitive." He added.
"No no it's ok." You said while laughing. He also laughed and looked at you through the rear view mirror.
"What about you Hargrove?"
"California." He said.
"Why did you move to a shithole like Hawkins?" You asked. He clenched his jaw a bit and you regretted asking.
"I'm sorry- you don't have to answer." You added.
"It's fine, just um- family stuff." He said.
"Ah."

You made small talk and suddenly he moved his hand to your thigh. Your breath hitched and you blushed, it was so obvious to. He looked over at you and chuckled.
"What?" You ask him, still blushing.
"Do I make you that nervous?" He asked with a chuckle.
"Don't know if you make me nervous, I've never skipped school so I'm nervous about that." You said. And he looked shocked.
"You've never skipped?!" He asks.
"Nope, grade A attendance."
"Well I'm going to ensure that today will be fun, because I'm baffled that you've never skipped." He said with a laugh.
"Baffled?" You also started laughing.

We both arrived at the diner and he grabbed your hand as you walked through the door, his hands were warm. You both went and sat in a booth and ordered your food shortly after.

This was weird, one of the most popular kids in school out with the outcast. Something you only see in shitty romance movies. The waitress came back with our food and smiled at us. She was the usual waitress here, she was also super nice. Maybe in her 50s?

You ate and chatted about some stupid shit that happened in school. You genuinely enjoyed his company. You didn't want to mess up what you both had going on, because you did enjoy your friendship, but you should tell him how you actually feel about him. Maybe- next week? Yeah, next week.

After you finished he paid and you tipped the waitress. She smiled and wished you a good day. You got back out to the car and got inside. He put a cassette tape in and you were off.
"Where to now?" You asked.
"A surprise." He said and smiled. You smiled back at him.

When a song came on, you quickly turned up the volume. Round and round by Ratt played.
"You like this song?!" He asked looking exited.
"Hell yeah! It one of my favorite songs." You responded. You both sang the song and he tapped his finger on the steering wheel to the beat.

When he pulled up to a dead end and parked his car on the side of the road you were a little freaked.
"Am I going to be killed Hargrove?" You said.
"One, absolutely not, secondly if I were I wouldn't have told you." He said.
"Touché." You said with a laugh.

You walked into the woods a bit until there was a cliff, in perfect shot of the entire town. It was beautiful.
"Wow." Was all you were able to say, at a total loss for words.
"I know." He said smiling at the view as well. The sun was starting to set so everything had an orange glow to it.

You went to sit down at the edge and let your feet hang off. You both just sat there for a bit occasionally saying a few words. Until he looked at you, when you noticed you looked concerned.
"What?" You asked him.
"Well- there was something I was going to tell you-."He said, you were giddy but also kinda worried.
"That is?" You asked and couldn't help but smile. He looked at you and shook his head.
"Um- never mind." He said.
"You can't tell me." You said and put your hand on his. He jumped a bit.

"We should- get going." He said and got up to walk to back to the car. You joined him and not one word was said on the way back to the car, same with the ride back home. It was silent. The only thing was the music.

"I'll see you at school?" You said as you got out of the car to head back inside.
"Yeah." He nodded, he didn't grin like he usually did. You were kind of scared now. What did he want to tell you?

You heard him drive off as you opened the door. You dad was passed out on the couch with beer bottles scattered across the floor. You walked up stairs quietly and sat on your bed. You would confront Billy tomorrow, now you really just wanted to know what was wrong.

You drifted off to sleep after a while...
