A letter; February 03, 2009

Happy birthday to our beloved Suguru!

Mom and Dad are so happy we got to celebrate this day with you. We raised such a kind, loving, caring boy, and we're so excited to see who you'll become in the future. You deserve all the love and happiness in the world, Suguru, and we hope that you always find yourself surrounded by people who will love and cherish you as much as we do.

We'll be with you every step of the way, and we want you to always remember that.

A snapshot of an afternoon in a 1LDK Tokyo apartment living room ; February 03, 2020

There are two people on the couch, like always. There is a cat lounging lazily on one man's lap, squinting at the newly-acquired television set. On the coffee table in the center of the room lies two keys with similar keychains—one half-sun and one half-moon. Their rough edges are facing each other. There is a small pot containing an even smaller succulent on the center of the table. On its right is a plate with two slices of cake with cherries on top of both slices, while on the left there is a steaming bowl of noodles.

The blinds let in only small slivers of the harsh afternoon sunlight, but the golden hour bathes the room in faint yellow all the same. Outside, the city noises rush by.

Omoide no yokocho episode #121 transcript — excerpt ; March 28, 2020

SATORU: Guess who just graduated?

SUGURU: Me.

SATORU: Correct, but me too!

SUGURU: I'm so fucking happy that we're finally finished.

SATORU: Right? I feel like I got delivered from evil.

SUGURU: Since when were you Catholic?

SATORU: I'm not.

SUGURU: That was a rhetorical question.

SATORU: I know, but I like to keep things fun.

SUGURU: Sure.

SATORU: Of course, Suguru. Anyway, moving along, we have bad news for everyone.

SUGURU: We are really really sorry.

SATORU: We are.

SUGURU: Why don't you do it, Satoru?

SATORU: Why does the hard job always fall on me?

SUGURU: You brought it up.

SATORU: Fine. Okay, everyone, we're closing up shop. We'll have this as our final episode, and then we'll be off the grid.

SUGURU: That doesn't mean we aren't grateful for your support, though. It's just that it's an incredibly weird time in our lives. If you do see us around then don't hesitate to say hi! We've shared a lot through the years and we will always treasure that.

SATORU: But before we leave, we have one last love story to share with you guys, just as a parting present from us to you.

SUGURU: It's a bit long so this episode might take twice as much time.

SATORU: Don't worry, I'm sure they'll enjoy it.

SUGURU: Will they?

SATORU: Come on, Suguru. Because this story is special we decided to give it a name! What did we name it, Suguru?

SUGURU: Saturday Night Live.

SATORU: We sincerely hope Jimmy Kimmel doesn't sue us for this.

SUGURU: Well he might now because I think that's a different show altogether.

SATORU: Good, now we'll have two shows suing us. Fun!

SUGURU: That's not the kind of responsibility I'm ready for.

SATORU: And neither was this podcast. Why don't you take it away, Suguru?
