FAWN
He is so good looking.
"So, you're here with your daughter, correct?" He asked. I didn't want to tell him that she wasn't officially my daughter. I didn't exactly know--or trust--him. Yet. So, I just nodded, "Yes."
Ami was in her stroller, sleeping. He came closer and looked at her. "She's very cute," He commented, giving me a smile.
My heart...
"So," he started, stepping back, "is there an issue? She looks healthy from what I see." I thought about that for a moment.
All you did was look at her.
"No, I'm pretty sure she's fine. I was just told that I should get a pediatrician for her." I responded honestly. "Who told you that?" He asked. "Some women at this Single Mothers group." I told him. He looked up and started laughing, as though it all made sense.
I don't even know what it is.
"They told you I was attractive, so you came in, right? That's what always happens." He said, very smugly.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
"Don't act like you don't agree with me, you know it's true. Your heart is pumping right now, I bet," he said, then looked at me with a smile.
I looked at him, completely dumbfounded. I picked up my bag, got a hold of the stroller, and rolled up out of that doctor's office. I could not believe the arrogance some people possess.
"Hey, where are you going?" He asked, following me out. I didn't even bother turning around to look at him. He jogged up in front of me and stopped my stroller.
Damn this narrow hallway.
"Is not like I was lying!" He protested. I sucked in a lot of air, trying to calm myself down.
"Look." I said, pointing a finger right at him. "Do you want to know what those wonderful women said about you?" He just looked at me.
"They said that you were a wonderful doctor, you meet the needs of all their children, and that they highly recommend you." I breathed in, then out, glad that I said it. "Being here today, I don't know why." I looked at him, waiting for a reply. If I didn't get one soon, I'd be pushing him with my stroller, I don't care.
He looked at me, then started smiling. I mean, really smiling. Like, legitimately, smiling. I think you get it.
"Wow..." He said, looking at me. He seemed pleased. Not even satisfied. Pleased.
"What?" I asked, not really understanding what was going on. And having a strong desire to leave.
"I always do this kind of test on my clients. Mothers and fathers. I check to see how much you value having a good Pediatrician for your baby by testing your patience. I base it on your limits. 95% of the people that come here 'pass' per se. And, you..." He smiled again, looking me in the eyes. "You, Miss Fawn, are very passionate... About your daughter, of course."
"Ha... I'll take it as a compliment," I laughed very lightly, looking around uncomfortably.
"Well, if you would please, let me escort you back into my office." He gestured toward his door. I looked at the door, then at him. Finally, I looked at Ami.
I guess it wouldn't hurt...
******
I came back home, expecting a quiet, peaceful welcome from my furniture. You know how it is.
"Finally home, baby." I whispered to Ami, opening the now unlocked door.
What. The. Hell...
"SURPRISE!!" Talia exclaimed, giggling with delight. She was there along with her husband, Jason, Tania, Sara, Catherine and Trent.
I looked around the room when my eyes stopped at a sign that read 'Happy Baby Shower!'.
"What's going on you guys?" I asked, very happy but confused. Is this even for me? Or did they get confused by the fact that the door opened-.
But this is my house... Who else would they have been waiting for?!
"It's your baby shower!" Talia shouted. I winced, covering my ears partially. I moved my hands and hugged everyone, thanking them for coming.
"We all brought gifts, since you are a new mother," Sara said, pointing to the small table with gifts on it.
"Thank you, everyone." I said with a smile, looking around the room. I took Ami out of her stroller, then into her crib, coming back to join everyone soon after she'd fallen asleep.
After that, everyone started chatting and we ate sandwiches, cakes, treats, and some seafood prepared by Talia.
"So, did you get me something?" I asked Trent, who was sitting beside me. He looked at me, then laughed.
"Of course I did." He stated, "I am your fiance. It's my job to shower you in love and affection."
I extended my arms, then closed my eyes and smiled expectantly, "okay, where's it at? I'm ready for my love and affection wrapped up in a beautiful box."
I could hear some shuffling, the sounds of paper, then hands readjust the position of my arms, and a large box placed in them. Trent laughed, then said, "you can open your eyes now."
Without a second thought, I opened my eyes, and the large purple box, as fast as I could. It had way too many layers, and after a lot more digging than I expected, I finally laid eyes on the gift that Trent got for me.
It was a picture frame with cute sections for different milestones in our lives. Which was a surprise, considering he wasn't super enthusiastic about the possibility of me being Ami's new mom. Aside from the frame, there were also some stuffed animals and a cute yellow hair tie.
"Obviously," Trent started, "some of that stuff will be used later. But, I just thought you'd like it. Do you... Like it?"
He wasn't the most observant person I'd ever met, and there were so many things I'd told him in the past that I could've sworn went right over his head. But, he remembered how much memories meant to me, and being able to have them at home as a reminder of some of the biggest moments in our lives.
It was definitely one of my favourite gifts so far.
I put down the gifts, then moved to give him a hug,
"I love it. Thank you."
