The following morning went by quite quickly. Hailey and Jay had slept in and spent some quality time in bed talking and making out. It had been a while since they spent a lazy morning in bed. They decided to take advantage of their rare day off, so they had waffles and coffee instead of their usual muffin from the coffee shop near the district. Jay had plans with Will for lunch and invited Hailey to tag along, but she declined. She had a mountain of errands she had to do, one of them including grocery shopping. Part of adulthood she hated the most was having to make time in her busy schedule to complete these tasks, such as laundry and shopping. She rarely got days off, and she despised having to spend them cleaning her apartment or walking through aisles trying to find sugar. But they were part of life, and she had to get it done.
On her way home from the store, Hailey got a text from Trudy asking if she could pop into the district to sign a few papers from an old case. She drove to the district and parked her car. Hailey walked through the front doors of the district and was greeted by Platt.
"Goldilocks. Thank you for coming in." Hailey smiled, resting her arms on the front desk. "You forgot to sign these papers from the homicide case last week. Just sign these, and you can go." Trudy said, handing her the papers to sign. Hailey grabbed a pen and quickly skimmed through the paperwork, ensuring everything was correct. She quickly signed them and handed them back to Platt. "Actually, can you give these to Voight upstairs?"
Hailey paused. "Voight's here?"
"Yeah. He should be upstairs."
Hailey quickly thanked Platt and slowly approached the gate. She needed to talk to Voight. She wanted to know what happened to Roy after she left. She wanted to hear from Voight that he got everything covered. That everything was fine. Voight couldn't continue to ignore her or the others. When she reached the top, she saw Voight in his office working on a stack of papers in front of him. He looked calm, liking nothing ever happened. Hailey went into his office and knocked on the doorframe.
"Hailey. I told you to take the day off." He said, looking up.
"Yeah. Platt just wanted me to come in and sign a few papers." Hailey said, showing him the papers in her hand. "She wanted me to give them to you." She handed the papers to Voight, who read over them.
"Alright, I'll file these with the rest." She nodded. Voight returned to the paperwork on his desk but stopped when he realized Hailey was still there. "Need anything else?" Hailey hesitated. She deserved the truth. She needed to know what had happened. And all she had to do was ask.
"What happened after I left, Sarge?" Voight's face showed that he was confused, but Hailey knew he understood the question. He knew what she meant, but he was avoiding it. "What did you do to Roy after...." Hailey stopped. She couldn't even finish her sentence. She couldn't even say out loud that she had killed Roy.
Voight sighed and went back to his paperwork. "Just let it go, Hailey. What's done, is done. All we can do is move on."
"You can't just tell me to let it go. I deserve to know what happened after I left. After you made me leave."
"Hailey, all you have to know is that Roy is gone, and he won't hurt another person ever again."
"That's not good enough." Hailey raised her voice. "Sarge, not knowing what happened to Roy is eating at me." Hailey was getting impatient. "What happened in the warehouse, it can go wrong a thousand ways. And I don't want it to bite me in the ass later on."
"Hailey, the only two people who know what happened are you and me, and it's gonna stay that way," Voight said, raising his voice.
"You're going to keep this from the unit? What, you're gonna tell them that Roy just fled the country, that's it, end of discussion?" Both Hailey and Voight were getting impatient. Hailey wanted to know the truth, and Voight just wanted to leave what happened in the past.
