{this chapter may not be the most canon storyline but this is how i interpreted thoma's past and i am giving false personalities to other characters who do not have a name nor exist in the canon storyline.}
opening up like this isn't easy, nor do i recall what happened very clearly. it's all a blur but i do remember crying and calling out for anyone. the someone who i wanted to save me that day was you, diluc. yet you lied. you promised that you'd save me whenever i needed it. you promised to stay by my side. you promised to calm me down or comfort me when i needed it yet you weren't there. you're a liar. or perhaps, i'm delusional. you weren't a liar, you just couldn't be there, and yet, i expected you to be some god who could be there in an instant..
Third Person POV
thoma stared out the window and sighed to himself. he watched the cursed waves crash against the ship, causing him to jump as he was startled by the noise. he heard yelling, screaming and crying but before he could think, his feet immediately moved and he rushed out to see what was happening. bellowing claps of thunder and quick lightning flashed in front of thoma's eyes. his heart sank.
"thoma! get everyone under cover and keep them safe. the storm will pass and we promise we will make it through safely!" the captain yelled and thoma rushed to get everyone to safety. once he knew everyone was safe, he began to stress out and the storm grew far more aggressive. was this it? was this where thoma was to die? he knew he couldn't have that mentality but considering the storm surrounding inazuma, he doubted that he'd be safe for very long.
he tried to stay alive. he really tried but was it worth it?
<in mondstadt, approximately 3 days after thoma had left>
diluc heard the chattering of the knights in training as he leaned against the stone building. he wanted some time to himself to collect his thoughts until a certain girl appeared and interrupted him.
"hey diluc, i know you want to be alone but have you heard the news?" amber said as she tilted her head slightly to look at diluc. he shook his head. amber sighed and placed her hand on diluc's shoulder.
"you remember how thoma and some others left to go to inazuma?"
"yes, why? did something happen?"
"precisely. the ship went down and there have been no reports of anyone making it out alive, including thoma."
diluc's face scrunched up as he glared at the girl. "that's just a rumor, isn't it? if this is jean making you do it, cut the crap. thoma and everyone else aboard is a lot stronger than that. i'm sure they made it just fine." he crossed his arms and turned his head away from amber.
"diluc, please.. it's true! i promise that jean didn't do anything, this is straight from the grand master himself. i'm sorry." amber looked at diluc and noticed that he was shaking. he turned his head to her with tears welled up in his eyes. "amber.. please tell me you're lying.. he can't be gone.." she immediately embraced the boy as he sobbed into her shoulder. diluc felt as if a piece of him was gone. he was incomplete.
kaeya had found his brother asleep under a tree, holding a small plushie in his hands and looking a lot more sick than he had previously. kaeya believed that diluc had gotten better but he assumed that he had heard the news about thoma and kaeya knew that it would've broken diluc in two. kaeya was close to thoma but not as close and thoma and diluc were. they were inseperable, they spent time together, thoma helped diluc train by always bringing diluc snacks and water and they just were the best. well, according to kaeya that is. he loved his brother more than anything else, he would do whatever he could to make sure that his best friend would be happy and safe.
"hey luc.." he whispered as he sat next to his brother, he cautiously placed diluc's head on his shoulder as he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist and a head bury into his chest, it was diluc. diluc must've been half asleep when kaeya arrived which made kaeya sigh. he hugged his brother tightly and pet his head softly. he heard the wind flow by with the soft sounds of quiet sobs, diluc had begun to cry again. he cried and cried until their father came out of the city to find them and once he did, the two boys were asleep.
diluc didn't wake up until a day later during the night due to the fact that he had managed to get a fever. he woke up in a cold sweat with tears streaming down his face. he looked outside his window and then into his lap, all he could recall was crying until he passed out from exhaustion on kaeya's shoulder.
"LUC! YOU'RE FINALLY AWAKE!" kaeya exclaimed and dropped the damp cloth, immediately rushing over and hugging his shaking brother. diluc hugged back and sighed under his breath.
"i miss him kae.."
