I couldn't believe it was happening. Now, of all times. The universe truly had a sick sense of humor.
"Daria, where are you going?" I heard Taylan's frantic voice behind me.
I was practically sprinting down the stairs, barefoot, in last night's dress. I didn't know where I was going to go. Everything felt too much and I couldn't do anything about it. I was aware of everything around me, more than usual. The hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood up. My stomach churned.
When I made it out of the front door, I couldn't hold it in anymore. I fell to my knees and hurled.
"Dari!"
I couldn't respond; my stomach kept contacting as I emptied it on my boyfriend's porch. Tears welled up in my eyes. This was horrendous. My head was spinning and my body felt on fire. My heart was racing yet my flesh felt numb.
"Dari, Jesus," I felt his presence next to me.
"I-I'm fi. . ." I struggled to find my voice. "I'm fine. . ." I felt my body begin to shake.
Everything around me started to fade. My vision blurred. I couldn't compare how I was feeling with anything I've ever experienced. I would describe it feeling like diving into a void that contained unending darkness.
. . .
Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep. . .
"You are telling me she's fine, but look at her. She's far from fine! Are you even a doctor?"
"I am-"
"Get me a real doctor."
Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep
"Young man, I'm telling you this is just a case of low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia. Its nothing to worry about."
"Then why hasn't she woken up yet?"
"I gave her a mild sedative. She-"
"Why would you give her a sedative?" demanded the voice. "She passed out, after throwing up water, how can you—"
"Taylan. Relax. Why don't you go and grab us a coffee," came a calm voice.
Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep. . . Beep. . .
I heard a huff and then footsteps growing fainter. I attempted to open my eyes, and failed.
"I'm sorry about him, Tom. He's just confused. He doesn't know."
I attempted to move, but my entire body felt ten times more sore than it did earlier.
Could someone make that beeping stop?!
"She's going to be okay, right uncle Tom? Dad? She's gonna be fine right?" Alice is here?
"Mmm. . ." I tried to speak.
Beep, beep, beep, beep. . .
A gasp sounded through the room. "Oh my God! She's waking up!" I heard heels thumping over in a hurry. "Aria? Can you hear me?" She took my hand.
I'm thirsty, I wanted to say. But I couldn't even get my lips to part.
"Why is she responding like this? I thought werewolves only turn for the first time on a full moon, at night," Alice spoke in a hushed voice.
"She's different. I'm having difficulties understanding it myself. All I know is that she's not in control of her body right now. She won't be until she embraces the turn."
Embrace the turn? What does that mean?
"So until she's ready, she won't wake up?" Mrs Forbes interjected.
