it's the last day of my junior year of high school and I can't decide what to wear. jane is supposed to fly in from California in a few days which is funny considering I used to live there. she and will moved there with his family after her father died in a fire accident and bullying got bad for will. his mom, joyce, thought is would be best for him to have a fresh start. we haven't talked in a year and things kinda got complicated before she left. i've gotten to know people a lot better like my friends dustin and lucas by playing dnd. mike hangs around sometimes but has been distant since jane and will left. this older weird band geek girl named robin has become a sort of older sister to me. we get along well with the shared interest in well...girls. she's close friends with steve who is practically everyone's babysitter and dating nancy, mike's sister. finally, billy, my stepbrother, well he also died in the fire accident like jane's father. i don't talk about it much though because i think it may have been my fault...

"max?" lucas asks in the doorway of my room.

"coming!" i grab my bag and head with him out to his car.

the end of the school year chatter carries throughout the school's hallway as I walk down it.

"hello, my fellow friends" dustin approaches us putting an arm around both mine and lucas's shoulder's.

"hi." I say slightly rolling my eyes and pushing his arm off me.

"so jane and will are coming back in a few days" dustin announces. "i was thinking we should do a campaign."

lucas darts his eyes away and i frown a bit. we were playing dnd...I mean until me and lucas started flaking out. it's just that lucas got busy with basketball and well I sorta stopped talking to them for a few months and drifted until lucas called me up begging to hang out. as annoying as it was he's fun to hang around.

"please guys it's been months" dustin pleads.

"well basketball is over...I guess it wouldn't hurt" lucas replies. "max? you in?"

"ugh okay, just as long as I get one of those dumb shirts dustin made" I tease.

lucas and I giggle as dustin sighs.

my mind drifts to jane and the moments we shared two years ago. it's felt like forever but I miss her even as difficult as things got.
